Shann studied abroad in both Spain and Germany and has visited twenty-six countries, many of them before twenty-one and without her parents' consent. She speaks Spanish, Croatian, and rapidly declining French. Before becoming a writer, Shann graduated from Sweet Briar College, owned a multilingual staffing company, tried her hand at corporate gifts, and taught Spanish with occasional travel sabbaticals in between.
Born in South Carolina, Shann began visiting Croatia in 1992, immediately falling in love with Croatia and a very tall Croatian as well. She made sixteen trips to Croatia, many of them for months at a time, until finally moving there in 2004.
