"The Death Wizard Chronicles" by Jim Melvin is a six book epic adult sword and fantasy. Bias alert- I'm a big fan of the series. It's like the Lord of the Rings with a touch of basic Buddhism with the action of Conan the Barbarian. It's Star Wars but in pre-medieval times. Wizards, demons, dragons, fairies, druids, vampires, snow giants, ogres, witches, and several species of humans all live in this vast land with snow capped mountains, an ancient aware forest, wide savannahs and a great desert complete with Gila monsters.

This review is about Book 2, MOON GODDESS. Note: this is a series and it is best read starting from Book 1, THE PIT. Melvin ends each with a hook that segues into the next book. His writing style of using different perspectives for each scene ties in the different characters and their actions to arrive at that point in time. It really puts a depth into the story without it bogging down in too much historical background.

In Moon Goddess, we find out Princess Laylah's story and the relationship with Torg, the Death-Knower. A death-knower is one who has died, went to the other side, and came back. This gives the death-knower special powers, the story ends with the very ill Laylah at death's door. The beginning of the Eve of War picks up with Laylah being saved.

In this story, the very evil demon Vedana manipulates events to protect them against her grandson Invictus, the most powerful being in the world. Vedana's greatest wish is to be fully incarnated in this universe and she had planned on Invictus to help make that happen. But a slight miscalculation on her part leads Invictus to be her enemy, so she must assist Torg and company unbeknownst to them.
It's best to have book three available, because I didn't want to stop reading. I picked up the next right after this.
