Editorial Reviews

Review

"The latest in the batch of Moon Handbooks releases proves again that Moon is one of the finest travel series around. What sets Moon apart from most most guidebooks is the attention to detail, and more importantly, a respect for the topic."

More About the Author

Back in school, Bill Weir always figured he'd settle down to a career job and live happily ever after. Then he discovered traveling. After graduating with a B.A. in physics from Berea College in 1972, Bill found employment with corporate America, but the very short vacation breaks just didn't provide enough time for the trips he dreamed of.

So in 1976 he took off on his trusty bicycle, Bessie, riding across the United States from Virginia to Oregon with Bikecentennial '76. The following year he took off on an even longer bicycle trip--from Alaska to Baja California. Then came the ultimate journey--a bicycle cruise around the world. Bill pedaled the globe from 1980 to 1984, spending most of his time in the South Pacific and Asia, getting as far west as India's Thar Desert. Naturally he used Moon's excellent South Pacific Handbook and Indonesia Handbook. Correspondence with the authors led to the idea of writing a guidebook of his own. Bill returned to his home base of Flagstaff, Arizona, and set to work researching and writing Arizona Handbook.

As soon as he'd finished that book, Bill headed north to the Beehive State to create Moon Handbooks: Utah. Back in Arizona, he plunged into yet another comprehensive guide, Moon Handbooks: Grand Canyon, centered on the wonders of the colorful chasm. Bill has also written the text for National Geographic Traveler Arizona, which describes the state's highlights accompanied by beautiful photography.

In 1991, while exploring the Buddhist meditation traditions in Thailand, he updated a little guidebook, A Guide to Buddhist Monasteries and Meditation Centres in Thailand, published by the World Fellowship of Buddhists in Bangkok. Another author, Pataraporn Sirikanchana, updated and expanded the book in 2004. Copies are available in Bangkok at the World Fellowship of Buddhists (south side of Benjasiri Park) and a bookstore north across the street from Wat Bovornives. You can also find online versions by doing a search with the book title.

Bill continues to explore Arizona and beyond, always discovering new places and learning more about the old. He completed his round-the-world bicycle ride with ol' "Bessie the Bicycle" in 1995 and has since ridden extensively in Europe and Asia with his new "Bessie Too the Bicycle." Bill no longer writes for the Moon Handbook series, but you can read his Arizona travel guide online at www.arizonahandbook.com

5.0 out of 5 stars The best Arizona guidebook since, well, forever?, February 18, 2007
This review is from: Moon Handbooks Arizona (Paperback)
I've been relying on Bill Weir's Moon guide since it first came out in 1986. I still have a first edition in storage somewhere (I think). These comments apply to the 9th edition, published in early 2005 -- which means a 10th edition is likely in preparation as I write this review.

In addition to the 9th ed., I have in front of me the 6th ed. of 1996. It's interesting to compare the two. The older book is a "svelte" 488 pages; the new one weighs in at a hefty 650 pp., and is a bit larger-format, too. The newer book has, well, more stuff, better paper (less show-through), better maps, but doesn't appear as sturdily-bound as the older one, and lacks the nice rounded corners.

I've lived in Arizona for 30 years, but always learn something new thumbing through Weir's guide. About the only weakness is the occasional dodgy restaurant review -- and in fairness, these are 2-3 year old reviews.

If you live in Arizona, or plan to travel here, you need this guidebook. So, what are you waiting for?

OK, you can wait for the 10th ed. if you live here. Others, grit your teeth, fork over your 15 bucks. Money well-spent: half a tank of gas, a cheap restaurant meal....

Happy travelling--

5.0 out of 5 stars The End of the Road for Author Bill Weir, May 15, 2008

Alas, the 9th edition of Arizona (2005) is the last one that I will write in the Moon Handbook series. The publisher has contracted a new author to write a smaller, more opinionated 10th edition with new text. It should not be judged--good or bad--based on the previous editions.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Moon Handbooks Arizona (Paperback)
We have purchased about 7 Moon Books with Arizona being the latest purchase. Good refernce books---up to date and easy to read. We find them better than the AAA Tour Books. A fair price. Needs to be kept up to date with changes occurring so often,it is a good idea to check the "published date"
