Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

The Penguin Guide is written by 11 previously published travel authors and journalists, each of whom focuses on his or her geographic area of expertise. Coverage is consistent and quality is high. Areas covered are San Francisco (150 pages), Berkeley, Oakland, Marin County, the north and south coasts, and Palo Alto. Regional information is supplied for wine country, redwood areas, northeast California, gold country, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe, western Nevada, and the central coast. The standard specifics included are restaurants, hotels, directions, histories, telephone numbers, weather, etc. Northern California Handbook attempts to cover everything north of Los Angeles and generally succeeds. It is well organized and beautifully illustrated with black-and-white and color photos, and maps. Weir's "Northern" California extends from Santa Barbara to Oregon. A good bibliography and thorough index contribute to its usefulness. Information on camping and hiking is included, as well as telephone numbers for various restaurants, hotels, parks, ski areas, etc. Libraries should seriously consider both of these guides if they don't already have Jerry Graham's Bay Area Backroads ( LJ 5/1/90), or one of Randolph Delahanty's two handbooks , The San Francisco Guide ( LJ 6/1/89) and California: A Guidebook ( LJ 9/1/84). Also available from Moon Publications are Southeast Asia Handbook , ISBN 0-918373-52-2, $16.95; and Arizona Traveller's Handbook , ISBN 0-918373-41-7, $13.95.--Ed.

moon has made a very readable guide that is simply better than the rest. lonely planet also has a good guide, but the information seems to be tied together with rambling of factoids.
