Book Description

One of our greatest sources of wonder-the moon-becomes the focus of a classroom inquiry in this vivid illustration of integrated curriculum at its finest. Here, teachers Joni Chancer and Gina Rester-Zodrow recount how their students observed the moon's transit for twenty-eight days, recording their impressions in written and illustrated records called "Moon Journals."

As time goes by, we see these journals evolve from empirical observations into rich anthologies filled with prose, poetry, and artistic renderings using watercolors, pastels, printmaking materials, collage, and more. As the students experiment with multiple forms of composition, they begin to make sense of the world-and their place in it-in surprising ways.

Moon Journals contains some twenty-eight Writing Invitations and twenty-eight Art Invitations that are actually mini-lessons. Each is illustrated with samples from actual Moon Journals and each includes easy-to-follow, step-by step instructions for reproduction in the classroom. Also included are a full-color insert, samples of teachers' own journals, a bibliography, discussions on developing portfolios and the studio/workshop environment, and a chapter exploring the theoretical underpinnings of this approach to writing, art, and science investigation.

Moon Journals was written primarily for K-8 teachers, but it can also be used in high school and even at home. Above all, it is meant to serve as a model of fruitful inquiry in any subject area--in the realm of nature, or beyond.

Review

“[This book] is one of the richest resources we've seen. It's from none other than Heinemann . . .We've seen more journals in the last few years than we knew existed. This one is definitely worth knowing about.”–Teaching K8

5.0 out of 5 stars I Loved It!, December 28, 1999
This review is from: Moon Journals: Writing, Art, and Inquiry Through Focused Nature Study (Paperback)
Joni Chancer and Gina Rester-Zodrow paint a clear and exciting picture of what an inquiry based nature study can do to engage children in the classroom. I couldn't stop reading this book! It is practical with over 50 mini-lessons and lots of classroom snapshots that give teachers a firm foundation on which to begin. Chancer also offers good advice and theory explaining why art and writing are such a good match. I personally will be less controlling in my classroom- I was amazed at the results she got from her children when she gave them time to explore and experiment. As a 3rd grade teacher, this book will really change the way I do some things in my classroom. Thanks, Joni and Gina!

As a classroom teacher I find this book to be one of the best in our profession. It doesn't tell us it shows us! The most outstanding feature of this book is that the authors love to write and they inspire their students in their classrooms and the readers of this book to write. They know how to get the words flowing from beginners. I just finished reading a book that was written on how to teach struggling writers by a professor of writing and he did not teach me how to teach writing or motivate me like this book, Moon Journals did. I recommend this book to all teachers of writing, art, and science.

Moon Journals is a fantastic discovery book for teachers, students and even parents. The book centers on specific nature study and self-inquiry through writing and art. It is a wonderful companion to any teacher's classroom, and could be a really fantastic way for parents and kids to link together in the summer months. A definate MUST HAVE for all!
