I'm not usually a big fan of guide books. But this one helped immensely on my trip. It is so accurate in its advice that I often felt the strange feeling of walking in the footsteps of the author. For example, it describes a hidden path at a lookout point, and sure enough its there. Or when it says that a parking lot is going to be full at 8 am in the morning; it will be.

But the most valuable information to me was the "Highlights" page at the beginning of each section. Here the author tells you the "must see parts of the island." In my experience he is right every time. For example, I never would have thought to visit Limahuli Botanical Gardens. But it turned out to be one of the best parts of the trip.

I highly recommend this book if you are going to Kaua'i for even just a few days.

Actually I bought this book after having read much of it while recently on vacation on the island of Kaua'i. I discovered a copy in the vacation rental where I was staying and I just picked it up to do a bit of research on insects and birds, became fascinated and continued reading. After returning to the mainland, I decided that I'd like to finish the book and have a copy on hand before our next trip to the island. There is a wealth of information inside the cover. Not the only travel guide that I've read about Kauai, but I truly enjoy reading this book because it is fun and informative and an easy read. Tip: The advice on what to pack is excellent, if you like to travel light as I do, you will benefit by taking it to heart.

As a guide book, it's pretty good. Had I not first read the Ultimate Kauai Guidebook, I think I would have even given it another star, but frankly it pales in comparison. I found this guide book a little dry, and had trouble getting into it. After reading a few sections, I wasn't on the edge of my seat with excitement, raring to go, as I typically am after reading through a travel guide. A large portion of the book was a history of the island and its people, which was nice, but not what I was looking for in a travel book. I also found it to be outdated - some of the restaurants mentioned were no longer there and I could not find some of the trails in the book. Yes, things change quickly, but it's still nice to have a guide book that is current. I also wish there were more pictures, especially color pictures, as the ones in the book came out grainy (and looked outdated as well).
Overall, it'll get you by. But if you are only getting one guide book for your trip to Kauai, check out the Ultimate Guide Book - in my opinion it's a much better bet.
