Gorgeous, informative, interactive and educational pop-up book,
This review is from: Moon Landing: Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Pop-Up (Hardcover)
My family and I recently visited the Houston Space Center and our 5-year-old daughter has expressed a keen interest in the subject of space exploration. I got this book as a means of making the complex concepts associated with space exploration a bit more accessible, and given that she is a visual learner, felt the pop-ups would serve as a high-motivating factor.
The book itself is well-designed with lots of fun features that provide details about rockets, mission planning, space suits, moon landing, the life inside a space capsule, and many more. The book begins with a brief overview of how space travel came to be, with mention of Project Mercury and the first pop-up is the launching of the Freedom 7 Mercury capsule. There is also a tiny booklet which contains photographs of all the Apollo missions' crew members. The next pop-up is of the Gemini 4 capsule with a side fold-out of the Saturn 5 rocket. This is followed by details regarding the moon missions with a pop-up of the moon, the lunar module adapter, and command service module, and important facts covering the early missions. The next pop-up was the most fascinating for my 5-year-old - that of an astronaut in his space suit with details about the function of each part of the suit. There are also some interesting tidbits about waste management aboard the capsules which elicited giggles from my daughter! The final pop-up is of the Eagle landing on the Moon (quite wonderfully done might I add) with details about that historic event. This is a wonderful book for any child (and adult) that loves all things to do with space exploration. The pop-ups are well-done and the details are sufficient to satisfy basic curiosity whilst kindling interest to know more. Highly recommended!

This review is from: Moon Landing: Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Pop-Up (Hardcover)
This book gives the enthralling story of Apollo 11 in a clever, well-executed, and colorful format! Beginning with the Mercury Redstone Freedom 7 flight of Alan Shepherd, the book chronicles America's fantastic race to the Moon throughout the 1960's. The book is full of gorgeous photographs, drawings, and technical information on the various aspects of space exploration, including some of the various instrumentation. This is a great book especially geared for young people (probably K-6) who enjoy creative formats, however most adults would appreciate its concise, but wonderfully complete, glimpse of the history of Apollo 11 and what went into that mission. I bought my copy just because it so uniquely and extraordinarily presented the encapsulated history of this amazing mission. The final pop up in the book is a fun, colorful, and ambitious image of the Lunar Module "Eagle" and the two astronauts, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren, landed on the Moon surface. Once the pop up is opened, it must be about 10 inches in height! I dare say that most of my college students could benefit from reading the facts presented in the book as they are no longer common knowledge. If mankind continues to push out into space to study, understand, and hopefully benefit from our knowledge of the Universe, then it makes sense that we never forget our amazing history and the many Blessings of the astoundingly successful NASA missions of our nation's past!

My Father worked at Grumman when this was all happening so I plan to give this to my grandchildren for Christmas in 2011 so they can see what it was all about. Hopefully they will take care of this book and have it for many years as it is a pop-up book!

This review is from: Moon Landing: Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Pop-Up (Hardcover)
My 4 yr old is really into 'space stuff' and we saw this at barnes & nobles but it seemed so expensive. I checked amazon while at the store and it was a much better price. He of course likes the 'pop up' element but it's also very educational.

This is a pop-up book to treasure well into the future. Superbly illustrated, with amazing paper engineered pop-ups that tell the story of Apollo 11. Even the Moon receives a special treatment, coming to life, before your very eyes! The book itself is well manufactured and will stand the test of time. A real joy for any space cadet.

This book is so cool! I have bought several for nephews and one for keeping for the grandchildren when they're born. The pop ups are so detailed and vivid. They give a good look into what went on in space. I think this book is a great way to help kids understand more about the space program in a way their little minds can comprehend. I recommend it.

This is great for any child that is interested in outer space. Ages 6-12 will fall in love with this book. Best pop-ups I have ever seen, including a globe of the Moon! Little books hidden in pockets in this book are also a great idea. I bought 2, but I may be back.

Great Book For Kids to Learn About Apollo,
By OtherWorlds&Wisdom (USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Moon Landing: Apollo 11 40th Anniversary Pop-Up (Hardcover)
The 40th anniversary of Apollo 11 didn't get quite the attention as the 25th did in 1989 which spawned a multitude of histories during the '90s including: Moon Shot: The Inside Story of America's Race to the Moon, A Man on the Moon: The Voyages of the Apollo Astronauts, Apollo 13, Genesis: The Story Of Apollo 8 and movies like Apollo 13 and From the Earth to the Moon. It's sad that we abandoned the Moon and ever since have talked about going back. The shuttle years did produce some amazing feats (Riding Rockets: The Outrageous Tales of a Space Shuttle Astronaut), but Apollo, so long ago now, showed what we really could do. Maybe the kids reading this now will wrestle our destiny from the government and lead us back into space, to the Moon and beyond.
