I don't usually write reviews of products, but this CD is unbelievable. Jackie King has truly mastered the guitar and created one of the most surprising jazz recordings to come along in years. His virtuosity and tone are astounding.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sounds like a high quality demo and not a finished product
While King's playing is excellent, I fail to see how his introductions and solos make any reference to the songs chosen on "Moon Magic." King's musicians on Moon Magic are competent, but lack imagination. Overall, "Moon Magic" sounds like a high quality demo and not a finished product.

I've been collecting jazz guitar records for almost 15 years now; a friend turned me on to Moon Magic and it's now at the top of my list of recommendations to jazz audiophiles everywhere. Your collection isn't complete without it.

I hope to see him perform live someday; until then I'll wait (impatiently!) for his next release and try not to wear out my copy of Moon Magic in the process...

4.0 out of 5 stars The Most Under-Rated Contemporary Musician, July 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Moon Magic (Audio CD)
Moon magic isn't the five-star gem I discovered in The Gypsy. If you haven't yet had the pleasure of listening to, what I consider THE greatest jazz guitar album ever, then you must pick up on The Gypsy. Not only does Jackie King play..., but Willie Nelson comes along for the ride, providing vocals on four tracks and some pretty flashy guitar work of his own. But Moon magic is more than ample guitar virtruosity. Jackie King gets my vote as the most under-rated contemporay musician. These two fine albums should prove to all the uninitiated what a suberb musician he really is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Clear thinking and techniquely astounding, July 15, 1999

A must for all guitar players. So brilliantly produced that the production is invisible. They must have gone to the studio and just played.

Jackie rips! If you like really fast, bright Texas-swing guitar, here it is. I first heard Jackie when I stumbled across him playing at a coffee shop here in Redding, Ca.(surprize) He was playing so many notes while still remaining melodic and interesting. His solos never got boring. He's a true jazz guitarist. It's all here on this album so check it out.(This would be good to start with if you aren't really into jazz yet.)

5.0 out of 5 stars this cd rules, the other two reviews are kaka !, July 15, 1999

I bought this CD and love it! From reading the two previously posted reviews, I'd say there's a disgruntled ex-employee, jilted girlfriend or someone in need of a new stereo system.

The recording quality is excellent, the guitar playing is nothing short of phenomenal. Jackie King's solos are intricately wound around the melodic themes of these beautiful songs. Bassist Wilbur Krebbs' solos are playful and inspired; drummer Michael Aragon is tasty and dynamic.

Moon Magic is sophisticated yet accessible to anyone who loves guitar. I definitely encourage all guitar enthusiasts as well as jazz lovers to buy this CD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Jazz Guitar Master, May 21, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

Don't know what "A Customer" is talking about (maybe too young to be familiar with these old standards), but I recognized every one. Or maybe "A Customer" is unfamiliar with the long jazz tradition of improvizing on the melody. If neither of these are the case, than I am completely baffled by his comments. In any case, completely disregard that review. This is an amazing exhibition of jazz guitar by an absolute master. I have listened to this CD so many times I've lost count and it still sounds fresh every time I play it. Really, get this CD, you will not be disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Sleeper and a Keeper, July 25, 2009

Guitarist Jackie King is supported on this recording by bassist Wilbur Krebs and Drummer Michael Aragon in a program of nine songs, all of which have something to do with the moon--"Moon River," "Fly Me to the Moon," "Blue Moon," and so forth. Yeah, the concept might sound a little hokey, I guess, but believe me, this recording is anything but hokey. King is a tasteful guitarist with a solid style--he never seems to be showing off, and he seems to really enjoy spinning improvisations around these familiar tunes. This is really a solid CD, very inventive and entertaining; guitar lovers really ought to track this one down, because it is both a sleeper and a keeper.

5.0 out of 5 stars a Guitarist's Guitarist, October 27, 2007
This review is from: Moon Magic (Audio CD)
I had the priviledge of studying guitar in the 70's with Jackie for over a year and it changed my life musically. I would rate him up there with the greatest musicians from the past or present. If you love guitar, harmony and melody and the art of a truly beautiful interpretation of a song, you are going to be in for a treat!!!
