Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

Students and scholars will applaud this major contribution to American drama and the literature of African Americans. Mahone's comprehensive introduction is invaluable for its description of the roles played by African Americans in contemporary theater. Although the focus is on women, the discussion is placed within the context of theater as a whole. Mahone documents opportunities in all areas of publication, performance, and production of African American theater and includes biographies for the 11 female playwrights featured. The plays themselves are of exceptional literary merit. They deserve a wide audience for their excellence as theater and their broad range of issues such as gender, unemployment, the family, and religion. Highly recommended for academic collections and high school libraries.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moon Marked and Touched by Sun: A Dramatic Cultural Journey, June 8, 2000

This review is from: Moon Marked and Touched by Sun: Plays by African-American Women (Paperback)
"Moon Marked and Touched by Sun: Plays by African-American Women" takes the reader on a dramatic cultural journey which is well-worth the ride. "Moon Marked...", edited by Sydne Mahone contains plays by such celebrated authors as Aisha Rahman, Susan Lori Parks, and Adrienne Kennedy among others. Although some of the material such as Kennedy's "Funnyhouse of a Negro" and Parks' "The Death of the Last Black Man in the Whole Entire World" is a little abstract(to say the least), this anthology is a must-read for any one with an interest in Black theater and an eye-opener for anyone intelligent enough to want to delve into the mind of the African-American woman. "Moon Marked..." as a collection, deals with the paradoxes of being Black, being female, and being an artist in a world which can be cruel to all of the above. Do not miss out on the opportunity to bear witness to this creative collaboration. WARNING: This book is not for the weak at heart or mind; contains some profanity and extremely thought-provoking material.
