5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome First Person Shooter
I will pull no punches, I plain loved this game. Moon works as a really high energy first person shooter. Aliens come out, you shoot them. Shooting is challenging and the targets look great. The game also works as an adventure game... as you go through you uncover a story, you meet cool characters and even bond (at least I did) with your buddy, a remotely piloted droid...

Moon is not a bad game, but it is a disappointment. The graphics are average, the enemies are repetitive, sound is irritating, and the plot is trite. Even worse a year and a half ago the makers of this game, Renegade Kid, made Dementium: The Ward a game that had a very detailed environment, quality sound, and a decent plot. This game is on an improved game engine and looks and sounds much worse.
In the game you are a futuristic soldier on the moon. You are called to investigate a newly discovered underground structure filled with hostile robots. The plot starts out strong, but becomes increasingly boring as the painfully obvious plot twists keep coming.
The game does control very well, with the left shoulder button to fire, moving with the D-pad, and stylus to aim. There are a wide variety of weapons and a remote droid to explore small areas. In fact the droid is one of the best aspects of the regular gameplay. Also there are occasional fun driving boards.
One of the major problems with this game is the graphics. While they look good, it seems like they decided against an art direction and basically took one area and copied it repeatedly for the game. In a new area they might do a palate swap and the area is tinted blue or whatever, but it still looks just about the same.
The repetitive enemies are more of the problem. I think there are roughly 5 different types of enemies in the entire game that you will see over and over. Also the robot enemies are a bit uninspired. What is far, far worse is reusing bosses. I can understand reusing a grunt enemy, but in this game you will even fight the same bosses four or more times. Also if you beat a boss once it probably isn't that great of a challenge the third or fourth time.
I can look beyond a hokey plot or reusing walls or enemy sprites. What I can't excuse is that the game is extremely linear, without challenge, and boring. There is no part of the game that will force you to really think, just shoot. You see a small port - send in the droid. You see three blinking points on your map - go there and get three keys.
The entire game seems to have been inspired by the thought that Metroid Prime Hunters was too complex. That game, which came out three years ago, actually had levels that looked radically different, required strategy to beat enemies, and had an online multiplayer feature. If we consider that game as the standard for FPS on the DS then this game misses that bar by a wide margin.
Overall Moon is an average game. It controls well, the graphics are good, and with the first level, first drive in the lunar buggy, or first time fighting a boss it seems like a quality game. Unfortunately after playing it for more than an hour you will see the same enemies, same hallways and same bosses over and over again.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome First Person Shooter, January 18, 2009

I will pull no punches, I plain loved this game. Moon works as a really high energy first person shooter. Aliens come out, you shoot them. Shooting is challenging and the targets look great. The game also works as an adventure game... as you go through you uncover a story, you meet cool characters and even bond (at least I did) with your buddy, a remotely piloted droid you control. I also drove an awesome lunar buggy and found and unlocked hidden levels.

Graphics and technology are great. Moon runs at a steady 60 fps and looks better than any other FPS on DS. Controls are tight, and the game auto-saves and is easy to play in 20 minute chunks (perfect if you have kids and 20 minute chunks are all you're gonna get). Its also pretty long... it took me about 15 hours to play everything (main game and unlocked levels) on normal mode. I'm sure a faster player could do it in 8-10 hours, but then a really good player should give it a shot a veteran level. I like the music but of course it's a matter of taste. I think it works great with game and most people I've talked to like it, a few don't.

All around Moon is just a great first person shooter. If high performance sci fi shooters are your thing you'll love this. I certainly did.

3.0 out of 5 stars Solid FPS, Good music, atmosphere, but needs more, March 18, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Moon (Video Game)
I enjoyed playing Moon, its probably one of the better FPSs I've had on the DS since Metroid Prime Hunters. I played Dementium, and I feel Moon improves a lot on the shortcomings of that game. The weapons are unique and fun to use, there's enough, but not too much, ammo, the bosses require a little thinking as well as shooting, and the story is creepy and so matter-of-factly presented it leaves a little chill down your spine.
That being said, it can be improved on. Stage design itself was a little monotonous, (although considering it's set inside a factory, this is probably a plus), enemy types were few, and boss fights were repetitive. I usually like to see more than 4~5 kinds of enemies, and bosses should be different each level (although again, since they are supposed to be security systems, all being variations of the same model is believable if not the funnest). Overall, I enjoyed the game, and it gave me a good week's worth of FPS suspense and action.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good FPS for the DS!, January 16, 2009

I will make this short but sweet. This game has great graphics and control for DS standards. Very fun and easy to play, but the background music is very repetitive. The music actually reminds me of the music playing in the movie "Grandma's Boy" in the scene where the weird game designer is working on his game and listening to bad industrial music. Besides the music though, be very patient because the game is not your typical fast-paced action of a normal FPS shooter and there are lots of the "find the switch to continue to the next area" gameplay. It is a slow-paced game with a decent story and worthy of the purchase if you have been waiting for a good (not great) First Person Shooter for the DS.

4.0 out of 5 stars Moon....., June 18, 2011

Seeing as how FPS games are, pretty much, in short supply on the Nintendo DS, when I can get ahold of one for the system- I snatch it up(metaphorically speaking, of course, lol).

Moon is a FPS game developed exclusively for the Nintendo DS by Renegade Kid. Many of you probably already know but Renegade Kid made the Dementium games. The plot of the game takes place in 2058, with the US having set up stations on the moon. They are used, basically, for performing scientific experiments and using it as a launch station to Mars. A discovery is made at one of the dig sites of a hatch that leads below the Moon's surface. You assume the role of Major Kane, the leader of a special task force, to investigate and that is where your adventure (or is it nightmare?) begins.

What I like about Renegade Kid is they give you something dark and twisted with their FPS games..and, for the most part, Moon delivers. The best way to describe Moon to you is it is like Quake/Quake II as far as graphics and gameplay is concerned. There's not much thinking, just straight shooting to survive & exploring with puzzles here and there and that's what I like. They don't make FPS like that much anymore. They're getting way too complicated for my taste, anymore. Heck, id Software don't even make them like that anymore(I still say they need to grace us with a version of Quake on the handhelds). I had fun with the game, more than I have with(hate to say it) the DS Call of Duty games. This is a series that they should continue.

My only gripes with the game stem from the lack of different enemies to take on(that reminded me alot of Coded Arms for the PSP) and many of the environments looking somewhat the same(also alot like Coded Arms). I feel Renegade Kid could've worked on that alot more.

Now that the Nintendo 3DS is out, I'd love to see them do a FPS for that system. Overall, Moon ran at a smooth 60fps and it looked pretty decent on the DS. You could easily tell that it was inspired by Metroid Prime Hunters. I feel they could make a great console experience on the 3DS now that they cut their teeth on the DS with the Dementium series and Moon.

3.0 out of 5 stars Moon, September 18, 2010
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Moon (Video Game)
Moon feels similar to the original doom. The game is the first I've played on the ds. I am somewhat disappointed, the levels all feel very similar and the backgrounds and don't help. I feel like the graphics are below what you should be able to get from the ds. The controls in moon are innovative however uncomfortable. In order to turn left and right and to look up and down as well as aim you use the stylus on the touch screen. It makes aiming good, yet in order to support the ds and utilize the touch screen as well as the d pad, your right hand tends to cramp.

3.0 out of 5 stars Much Better then "Touch The Dead" & "Demetium: The Ward", February 8, 2010
By
= Fun:3.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Moon (Video Game)
After playing a couple of first person shooters lately on the DS, it sparked my interest to find one that was actually decent. I'd played "Touch The Dead" & "Demntium: The Ward" and they where decent enough, but too repetitive and got boring very quickly. This game is a bit of a step up over both of those games, but not quite as much fun as older games like Doom & Duke Nukem which would be nice to see a DS version of soon.

The story of this game is that you are on the moon as a research team or something, and suddenly aliens have arrived. I think the gist of it was the Earth team was exploring alien artifacts on the moon and the aliens came back. You start out by having to speak to your commander or someone, who briefs you along the way by radio (on screen text) and you grab a gun and head into the alien underground to seek things out, find out what happened, and kill the bad guys along the way. The control is pretty good, it's the same as "Dementium the ward" where you use your stylus to look around/aim, use up to move forward, and the shoulder L button to fire. Opening doors and things just requires you click on open on the screen when you see it highlight.

Along the way you will pick up a variation of weapons to choose from machine guns to lasers that have light power to big booming weapons. A varietal of much better weapons then in the other two games i mentioned. All up there is around 16 to 17 levels, and extra 18 to 24 if you find all the hidden artifacts in the game.
What I found unique about this first person shooter was the control of both character, and these remote control car things that you use to get into spaces your human character cannot (small areas) and it is a needed requirement to do, not just something on the side to figure out later. You may need to use your remote vehicle to gain access behind energy shields and disable them by shooting power sources so the shield is lowered for your character to be able to walk through.

What else was refreshing was the moon buggy. You actually get to drive it and cruise around on the moon from destination to destination while still shooting up aliens. The aliens themselves range from small flying droids to larger alien robot like things with alien heads controlling them... there isn't a great deal of different kind of enemy's, but it felt far less repetitive then the other two games i mentioned before that you are probably sick of me saying those other two games i mentioned before.

Overall, so far, this is the best FPS game I have played on the DS. But I haven't played a lot yet, so I am hoping there is something much better out there. But so far, if you are a shooter game fan, own a DS, then this one is worth checking out. It's not great, but it's not that bad either!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very, very good and entertaining FPS for the DS, January 21, 2009
= Fun:4.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Moon (Video Game)
First person shooters on the DS were basically exercises in trial and error (mostly error) once upon a time, but over the past couple years, we've seen the genre get progressively better on Nintendo's smash hit handheld. Renegade Kid, the developers behind the solid Dementium: The Ward, bring us Moon for the DS, which I've been looking forward to for a while now. A space-based FPS that puts you in the shoes of Major Kane, who has responded to a distress call on the moon, and finds himself trapped in a very bad situation. Unlike Dementium, Moon's emphasis isn't so much on shooting action, but on exploration, puzzle, and more traditional adventure elements. Kane also has access to RAD, a small droid that can come in pretty handy during gameplay, and adds some strategy into the overall gameplay as well. Technically speaking, Moon looks and sounds wonderful for a DS game. Despite the similar looking areas and environments, the game offers up some impressive textures and animation, and the controls are pretty slick to boot. All in all, Moon is a very fun experience that delivers the goods, and is definitely worth your time if you're an FPS loving DS owner.

I don't really care for the controls of this FPS. I got used to them, but there should be away to change them instead of just switching from right hand to left hand controls.
Using the stylus to aim and the directional pad to move was a bit frustrating at times.
When the game started I was into it, but as I played more it seemed like everything was the same. It was so repetitive.
Maybe i'll just give up on FPS's for the DS doesn't seem like there are any decent ones out there.
I also hated that when you die it takes you way back to the save point. That made me want to flush this POS down the toilet. I'm just going to sale the game instead. Too bad I can't get all of my money back.

Being new to the DS Lite crowd, Moon was my second game to purchase for the system. I really enjoyed the game (even on the rookie mode). It was challenging but straight forward in the game play. NEVER boring! I highly recommend this game!
