Book Description

2007
Amateur sleuth and cobbler Fulton Moon (yes his nickname is Full Moon) encounters beautiful and sinister Lucinda Mathews. Lucy, wife of prominent florist Arthur Mathews, wants to escape an abusive husband and Moon only wants to help. It isn't that simple. Helping results in muggings, kidnapping, blackmail and, oh yes, even murder. Moon's adoptive father and mentor Benjamin Franklin Washington, proudly African-American, provides guidance, but no matter which way Moon, a devout Caucasian, turns, it's the wrong way. And Benjie lets him know. Moon's business partner and former girlfriend, Francesca Diverona also becomes a victim through his fumbled attempts to help Lucy. Moon gets beat up more than once; has his shoe repair business, Moonshines, firebombed; and his car wrecked by a nemesis. Enlisting the assistance of the Chicago Police, ATF, FBI and EMTs, he avoids serious injury and several potential charges of criminal activity, wise cracking his way through the Chicago underworld and a couple of fine restaurants. Moon Over Chicago has humor, suspense, a little romance and more twists than a knuckleball at Wrigley Field.

More About the Author

J. D. (Dave) Webb resides in Illinois with his wife of more than 40 years and their toy poodle, losing all family votes 2 to 1. Dave served in the Security Service of the Air Force as a Chinese linguist and weather analyst in Viet Nam and the Philippines prior to spending 25 years in corporate management. A company purge promoted him to cobbler and he owned a shoe repair and sales shop for 11 years. During these careers he wrote short stories and suppressed an urge to write a novel. After making a conscious decision to live at the poverty level, those novels began forcing their way out.

Becoming a full time author in 2002, Dave has garnered several awards. A short story called The Key to Christmas placed third in the 2006 La Belle Lettre literary contest. His first novel Shepherd's Pie won a publisher's Golden Wings Award for excellence in writing. His second novel Moon Over Chicago was a top ten finisher in the 2008 Preditors and Editors Poll in the mystery category and was a finalist in the prestigious 2008 Eppie awards by the Electronic Publishing Internet Connection. He is also the Owner and Moderator of the Publishing and Promoting Yahoo group with over 900 international members.

4.0 out of 5 stars Don't Judge A Book By The Cover -, June 12, 2007
This review is from: Moon Over Chicago (Paperback)
What do you get when you combine a curious cobbler, a dead florist and Benjamin Franklin Washington? An amateur sleuth mystery novel over-flowing with entertaining characters that will keep you guessing and occasionally giggling.

Fulton Moon is a shoe repairman who takes on side jobs from time to time as a Private Investigator. It is one of these so called "side jobs" that leads Moon into the Chicago underworld and sets in motion a series of unfortunate events. When Lucinda (Lucy), the purported battered wife of flower shop owner, J. Arthur Mathews comes to Moon seeking protection and a means of escape, he is at first, reluctant. With undeniable video proof that the businessman murdered local florist, Russell Armstrong, Moon advises her to go to the authorities. However, because of her husbands powerful connections, she is convinced fleeing is the only option.

Moon could never have anticipated that his efforts would result in blackmail, kidnapping and much worse. From five star restaurants to murder, Moon bumbles his way through avoiding both serious injury and jail time. What started with a plea from a battered wife will serve as a permanent reminder that first impressions are not always trustworthy and one should never judge a book by its cover.

JD Webb captures the readers imagination and never lets go! I look forward to many more mystery adventures from this new author.

Happy Reading!
