Book Description

May 4, 2006 Moon Outdoors
Pennsylvania, the Keystone State, sits astride the East Coast’s main population centers. The state’s parks, forests and wilderness areas are less than a day’s drive for millions of people from Boston to Chicago to Atlanta. If you are looking for the perfect place to camp in Pennsylvania, you need this book. It's the ideal resource for finding campsites—from secluded alpine hike-in spots to convenient roadside stopovers — throughout the entire state.

Pennsylvania travel experts Jason and Heidi Miller bring you: descriptions of camping options, ranging from state park campgrounds to RV parks; complete contact information and summaries of each campground's scenic features, facilities, and nearby recreation opportunities; expert tips on gear, safety, and first aid, weather, low-impact camping, and camping with kids; easy-to-use regional maps, driving directions to each campground, and details on fees, reservation services, and helpful websites.

Moon Pennsylvania Camping has details on leading destinations such as, Ohiopyle State Park, Allegheny National Forest, Gettysburg National Battlefield, Lake Erie, Delaware Water Gap, the Poconos, Pine Creek Gorge, Raystown Lake, Susquehanna River, and the Appalachian National Scenic Trail.

5.0 out of 5 stars Invaluable Guide, May 31, 2006

This review is from: Moon Pennsylvania Camping: The Complete Guide to Tent and RV Camping (Moon Outdoors) (Paperback)
I have been travelling to Penn. over the last couple of years and thought I had run out of all the good stuff to enjoy. Boy was I wrong! This guide book let me know about a number of hidden gems that I had missed that were just fantastic. The format is simple to use, and the Top lists helped me quickly focus in on the best locations for each topic.

I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who plans to visit Penn and loves the outdoors, even if you are not tenting or RVing.

Pennsylvania Camping is designed to be a guidebook on campgrounds in Pennsylvania, and (as with any guidebook) some information will invariably change after publication. Others have given the book poor ratings based on innacurate information that's most likely not the fault of the authors. The book's descriptions of the campgrounds I'm familiar with are quite accurate, and the information presented is certainly very useful for planning a camping getaway. Not only are the facilities described in detail but tourist sites, hiking trails, and recreational opportunities in the area are also mentioned. This helps to ensure that you won't miss out on nearby attractions simply because you weren't aware of them. The inclusion of various bits of local history adds depth to the reviews as well.

I think one addition to the book which would be of use in our GPS-enabled world would be to provide the GPS coordinates of each campground entrance, or a street address which can easily be punched into a GPS unit. The contact information provided for some campgrounds is for a PO box or mailing address and not the actual address you'd need to drive to, which is what a GPS understands.

Overall, I believe the book is certainly a good value for the price, and it contains much more information than you'd find in an AAA travel guide. The authors have researched their subject well and their love of the outdoors is obvious through their writing. If you're planning a camping trip in the Keystone state, picking up a copy of Moon Outdoors Pennsylvania Camping beforehand will help you make the most of your adventure.
