Book Description

5 and upK and up
It is a day in June, and the old woman is sitting on her porch with her cat. She has fallen asleep and is dreaming of her man, who was lost at sea. When she wakes up, the old woman is smiling. She goes to the quilt she is making and cuts new pieces of cloth. She is sewing her dream into the design.
As the season turns and the moon waxes and wanes, the quilt grows beneath the old woman’s needle, recording life as it flows around her. When at last the quilt is complete, she sleeps and finally joins her man in his boat sailing past the moon.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

An elderly woman stitches the fabric of her life--past and present--into a quilt in Warner's (The Magic Sewing Machine) reflective, sophisticated story. As the moon waxes and wanes, the woman (whose eyes are closed only when her beloved cat's eyes are open, and vice versa) dreams "of her old man, who was lost at sea." She envisions him on his fishing boat, sailing through the sky on a rainbow, growing younger as he approaches the moon. After "sewing her dream into the design" of her quilt, the woman plants pumpkin seeds in anticipation of Halloween; a visit from trick-or-treaters, her own portrait and her pet's make it into her quilt as well. Elements of each spread further the quilting metaphor: fabric prints define the hills, shrubs and sidewalks around the woman's house, and perceptive children will revel in identifying objects and patterns seen on previous pages in the cleverly composed quilt (lilies from her garden, swatches of her kitchen curtains). In November, "glad to rest," the woman and feline sit outdoors beneath the moon and for the first time both of them close their eyes. A final turn of the page reveals that they have joined the woman's husband: a young couple on the deck of a fishing boat rides a rainbow. Youngsters may need some guidance through this symbolic tale, but will likely find the journey rewarding, and quilters of all ages will certainly cotton to it. Ages 6-10.

From School Library Journal

K-Gr 3-Warner's mixed-media illustrations are the most compelling feature of this story about an old woman who integrates her memories, dreams, and current life into the quilt she is making. Collage, colored pencil, and paint combine to lend color and texture to the text. The story itself may prove elusive to the intended audience. The unnamed protagonist dreams, "of her old man, who was lost at sea," and stitches the dream into her quilt. She plants pumpkins and flowers and they become part of her design. Children come for pumpkin pie at Halloween and they are included in her work. After she stitches in pieces representing herself and her cat, the quilt is done. She and her cat sleep and dream of returning to youth and sailing off into the moonlight. Young listeners may not recognize the quilt as a metaphor for a life completed and, if they do not, there may not be enough here to hold their interest.-Miriam Lang Budin, Chappaqua Public Library, NY

4.0 out of 5 stars Bemused..., December 9, 2001
This review is from: The Moon Quilt (Hardcover)
This is a beautiful book, with many of the illustrations looking like they are fashioned from snippets of cloth, as a quilt top would be. The story is gentle and cheerful. Here is the old woman working in her garden, and here she is entertaining a group of happy youngsters at Hallowe'en. Clearly she has a full and fulfilling life. And then in the next-to-the-last frame, after she has added her cat and herself to the quilt, they sit down together under the moonlight and...die??? I guess i'm used to authors who clobber you over the head with the punchline. I had to go back and read the story again to make sure i'd reached the right conclusion. Then i had to go look at some reviews of the book to see if other reviewers reached the same conclusion. I suppose that this book can be used to show children that death is a gentle thing when it comes to those who have lived a long and useful life...except that the ending really startled and upset me. I guess i didn't see it coming, and i didn't want the story to turn out that way. I would only recommend reading this book to children if you are prepared to have a potentially upsetting discussion about death and dying.

5.0 out of 5 stars Reads like a Hand Stitched Quilt Made With Love!, September 19, 2007
This review is from: The Moon Quilt (Hardcover)
I just received this book and it is already becoming a favorite of mine as well as my 3 year old daughter. The story reads beautifully and delicate, like an enchanting poem. It stirs all the senses, and the gorgeous illustrations bring it all together in a warm, cozy feeling. I'd call this a "home cooked" book. It truly feels like we own a little piece of magic in this book. A great bedtime read.
