sweet little book about making a new friend,
By Karen Post (Westminster, CO) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Moon Rabbit (Hardcover)
My toddler loves this book--we got it from the library and he was so upset at returning it that it made it onto his Christmas list so now he has his own copy!Plot: "Moon Rabbit" is a lovely book where a little white city rabbit, Little Rabbit, is lonely and stares at the moon every night wondering if there's another little rabbit somewhere "out there" until, one moonlit night, she finds a friend, Brown Rabbit, who lives in a park outside the city. The two rabbits have a great time together but eventually Little Rabbit misses the city and goes home--but she is no longer lonely because she now has Brown Rabbit as her friend. This book has a sequel: "Brown Rabbit in the city" where Brown Rabbit comes to visit Little Rabbit in the city and gets worn out because Little Rabbit runs him ragged trying to show him everything there is to do in the city. It all works out though--Little Rabbit figures out her mistake and they spend a quiet afternoon at a city park enjoying each others' company. To me "Brown Rabbit" is a bit preachy compared to "Moon Rabbit" and it bothers me that the two friends have to return to a park to enjoy each others' company; but my toddler really enjoys the drama of Brown Rabbit's distress followed by the happy resolution. The illustrative style is very calm and quietly beautiful--it's well represented on the cover: that style and color pallet are used throughout. I would definitely recommend this beautiful and sweet book.

Absolutely Brilliant,
By Jason Kirkfield "The Pride and Sorrow of chil... (Purple Mountains Majesty) - See all my reviews (VINE VOICE) (REAL NAME)

I read this yesterday in the bookstore and was blown away. I felt I had missed a Book of the Year. Then I looked on Amazon and saw only ONE review. How is that possible? Probably because Natalie Russell is a Scottish illustrator (first book: Hamish the Highland Cow) and not well known here in the US. Be that as it may, Moon Rabbit is a magical book. I do think my kids (age 4) will need a couple readings to fully appreciate the near apex of sadness toward the end. All is resolved, no fear! On that note, you can be sure I will get Brown Rabbit in the City as soon as it comes out later this spring.

Magic Rabbit,
By Helen Highwater (California) - See all my reviews

This is a delightful, magical children's book. The editorial review above tells you the plot. What it fails to convey is the magical illustrations: those rabbits might just dance off the page and into your imagination. This is a simple heart-felt tale, well told, and great for all ages.

Sweet book, not just for kids,
By Privacy, Please (Maryland, USA) - See all my reviews

I happened upon this book amidst a display of bunny books for Easter at a toy store. I read it all the way through and immediately thought it would be a cute gift not only for a child, but just as much (perhaps more so) for a twentysomething friend living in a distant place. The little white rabbit protagonist is a bit of an urban hipster, toting her favorite bag, visiting the cafe and the music store, riding in taxis. When she meets the little brown bunny he not only hops around the park enjoying nature, but he also plays the guitar, and the bunnies bond over music. Lots of us well past the "read to me, Mommy" age can relate to this story and its clever take on urban vs. park life.

A sweet, simple story about friendship told in exquisite pictures and a perfectly cadenced text. This is why picture books matter!
