If you are a big fan of the greasy soul-jazz of "Down Home Style" (which I consider a four star disc) you may be slightly befuddled by this release. This isn't the greasy jazz that you typically attribute to Mr. McDuff. Moon Rappin' is an atmospheric delight. It almost plays like a concept album with its spacey textures and suttle backing vocals. It sounds like the soundtrack for late 60's interplanetary travel. Complete with wah-wah guitars & flutes...don't pass this up.

If you already enjoy Brother Jack's music, there is NO REASON why you shouldn't like this one. Straight up groovin' beats. The band is running on all cylinders in this one. The fact that it's an import is pretty sweet too. The japanese writing on the inside is pretty neat.

Not your typical beans and cornbread Brother Jack album. This is a lot more polished, with songs bluesy and not so bluesy. Some very unique chord changes on the title track. Has a great back up band, including super bassist Richard Davis.Nice little space oddity.

"Moon Rappin'" is interplanetary organ jazz. The album was actually inspired by a conversation Jack McDuff had with the moon. If the inspiration for the recording didn't give it away, this session was cut in the late 60's. Wah-wah guitar effects, flutes, exotica inspired vocals and expansive arrangements connect this release to 1969. Depending on the listener's temperament, this characteristic is a drawback or asset. For this listener, the album is pleasantly dated. Personally, I wish this recording went even farther into cosmos. While moments employ musical devices from the 1960's, most of the recording sounds like straight-ahead organ jazz. I purchased this after hearing 'Oblighetto' on the "Summer Nights Sampler." I found myself putting in the disc only to play the one track repeatedly. After two years of this, I finally broke down and made the purchase. It seems that I'm not the only one since the hip-hop band A Tribe Called Quest used a sample from 'Oblighetto' as the cornerstone of their biggest single, 'Scenario.' A remixed version appears on "Blue Note Revisited." In any case, the original liner notes are included in this CD release. This charming document helps to establish the mind-expanding context. The only real drawback with "Moon Rappin'" is the length. At thirty-five minutes, this should have included bonus tracks. "Moon Rappin'" proves that the old man in the moon may actually be Brother Jack McDuff!

back beats, repetitive, dated sound effects...Brother Jack has many better efforts elsewhere. Some people may really enjoy this combination of new age and funk, 70s style..for me, it wears thin quickly.

Jack McDuff's organ has a very funky and fat sound but not in the "full speed ahead" Jimmy Smith style. Much of this album has almost a lounge music feel to it. There is plenty of experimentation with sounds here but all of the tracks work well. Overall I found this to be a very worthwhile album, it is easy to listen too, quite funky and also has enough intrigue to make it worthwhile listening to in detail.

Brother Jack is out of his funkin' mind!!,

In my opinion Brother Jack is just a plain old funky cat. When he's playing blues or whatever it is still funky. I like albums like moon rappin although there is none like this one. Jack swings and he gets down. the song "Oblighetto" was sampled by Tribe Called Quest "Scenario". This is one album where I enjoy all the songs on the album. Brother Jack is also a good horn arranger and proves it in flatbackin, oblighetto, and moon rappin. My favorite is flatbackin because he switches from funk to swing.
