Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Loosely connected by their incorporation of the paranormal, this quartet of novellas takes readers, with varying degrees of success, from contemporary Maine to the fantastical land of Callemore, the Scottish Highlands and the 19th-century Cornish countryside. The collection is bookended by its two strongest offerings—"Wolf Moon," Roberts's brisk romance between a female werewolf and the vet who may be able to cure her, and Willman's compelling gothic fairy tale "West of the Moon," which describes what happens when the human and Faerie realms collide. The remaining entries, Gregory's "The Moon Witch" and Langan's "Blood on the Moon," feature stock protagonists (the brave but impetuous heroine, the emotionally scarred, Robin Hood–like warrior, etc.) and stereotypically evil antagonists; in Gregory's offering, a witch and warlock unite to pursue their goal of world domination, and in Langan's, a vicious warlord rapes and plunders his way across the Highlands. These four authors have collaborated on previous anthologies (Once Upon a Midnight; Once Upon a Rose), so there's a built-in readership for this book. But with its uneven quality and strained integration of the "moon" motif, it isn't likely to be many readers' favorite.

5.0 out of 5 stars Story of love and magic, March 29, 2005
This review is from: Moon Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
Nora Roberts and friends have writen another series of stories that you are sure to love!

Nora Roberts - Wolf Moon was a wonderful story of a werewolf (lycan) and mixed up with the strength of love. I have never read a story on werewolves and had never thought I would like it. But this was a pleasure to read.

Jill Gregory - Witch Moon was a story of a journey not only over evil filled lands, but also a journey of learning about hope and faith. A wonderful fairy tale ending that one loves to believe that they lived happily ever after.

Ruth Ryan Langan - Blood on the Moon was a wonderful story based on honor, strength of the heart, wits and love.

Marianna Willman - West of the Moon is a story based on fairytales and folklore that turn out to be more than tales. What a wonderful picture Marianna can paint in one's mind to picture the beauty! Fairies, magic, love, curses and not quite sure how it was going to spin to the end...it was great!

All four stories are a must read and I am thankful I read them!!!!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, October 10, 2004

This review is from: Moon Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
I wish that I had read the reviews before I purchased this book. I bought it on the basis of the Nora Roberts story and it turned out to be the only one worth reading in the collection. I totally applaud Ms. Roberts efforts to help new authors but surely the bar should be a bit more equal? I felt ripped-off, so I'll donate the book to the library so people can read it without buying it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lover of books, January 31, 2005
By
Willow (St. Petersburg, FL) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Moon Shadows (Mass Market Paperback)
I have read the other review entries, and I have to disagree with some of them. I am an avid fan of Nora Roberts, and the other authors she coincides with. I have read all of their short story collections, and have loved every one of them! When I saw this book, I grabbed it off the shelf, and haven't thought twice about it. I do agree with the others that Nora's story was the best, but 'Moon Shadows' wouldn't be the same without the stories from Gregory, Ryan-Langan, and Willman. They are all great others in their own rite. I am looking forward for the next book in this short story series!
