A Wonderful Surprise!, May 27, 2000
This review is from: Moon Song (Audio CD)
I was listening to WEMU the other day and upon hearing Sarah Jane's tune "Suncycle", I was mesmerized and couldn't wait to buy this release. Sarah Jane Cion is a talent that all jazz lover's should hear and she will be around for a long time. Give yourself a pleasurable treat and indulge in "Moon Song"!

Incredible!, October 17, 2000
This review is from: Moon Song (Audio CD)
I had never heard of Sarah Jane Cion when I purchased "Moon Song." I was familiar with the Naxos recording label and with their reputation of releasing good recordings at rock bottom prices, but I didn't know they did any jazz. A small sticker indicated that Cion had won the 1999 Great American Jazz Piano Competition, which I had also never heard of. That and the price was enought to make me want to buy it. Besides, for a price like this, how could you lose?
This album is worth about three times what I paied for it. Sarah Jane Cion is an incredible jazz pianist, with a style that is intricate, musically, and profoundly lyrical. By lyrical, I don't mean "like Kenny G," but that she has a very good sense of how to "tell a story" through improvisation. Her compositions are outstanding as well, particularly "A Pond Beneath the Moon" and "Suncycle." Please don't let this release pass you by, I guarantee you'll never regret buying it. Besides, at this price, how could you lose?

Lyrical and Moving, November 21, 2000
This review is from: Moon Song (Audio CD)
This is a wonderful addition to the Naxos Jazz lineup and the Jazz Piano Trio realm. Ms. Cion is a dynamic and lyrical pianist with an original and moving touch. Six of the albums nine tracks are Cion originals and the opening track, 'A Pond Beneath the Moon', is worth the admission price alone, setting up an exciting and vibrant collection of pieces. Sarah Jane is strongly supported by the great Billy Hart and Phil Palombi and Rising Star Chris Potter provides the gravy as he guests on the title piece and the Cion original Suncycle. Also worthy of mention is the closing solo medley bringing the curtain down on a very strong album which is highly recommended.
