In 1978 I watched on TV a compelling children's drama series about a blind girl who could "see" a mysterious white stallion near the Uffington white horse on the hillside in Wiltshire. In 1978 I watched on TV a compelling children's drama series about a blind girl who could "see" a mysterious white stallion near the Uffington white horse on the hillside in Wiltshire. I remembered very little else except that I was both fascinated and slightly spooked, and was delighted to be able to buy the video recently from Amazon. I was half expecting it to be quite awful considering it is now 26 years old, but I was more than pleasantly surprised.

Because it is set at the turn of the (last) century, it has not actually dated at all and could easily be shown again today without anyone really batting an eyelid. Production all round is of a high standard from the acting (Sarah Sutton is almost ethereal as the blind girl) to the direction, and it it is entirely convincing.

The story itself is somewhat offbeat and intriguing, delving into the ancient monuments of Britain, myths, legends and even Paganism. It is hardly an action packed thrill-ride, but more a thought provoking, beautifully made story that will satisfy anyone who likes stories that are a bit different.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Moon Stallion, January 12, 2007
This review is from: Moon Stallion [VHS] (VHS Tape)
I remember this series so vividly. It wove celtic folk lore and legend into a wonderful mystery set in the Vale of the White Horse, where young Diana (there's some Roman mythology evoked as well) finds herself at the centre of a battle between good and evil over the fate of the Moon Stallion of the title. It was also rather tough minded for a children's show, not dodging the fatal consequences of ambition and a nurturing of the desire for revenge. Excellent performances made the cast of characters very vivid, both younger and older. The BBC has a knack for these highly individual, evocative dramas - I can't believe they haven't released The Moon Stallion on DVD. It belongs on the shelf alongside other masterpieces like The Box of Delights.
