Book Description

5 and up
Whenever the Moon's back is turned, the wicked bogles terrorize the townsfolk, coming out of their slimy holes to lure unsuspecting travelers to their doom. One night the Moon takes human form to rescue Thomas, a boy from the village who is lost in the marshy mist. In saving him, however, the Moon is captured by the bogles and imprisoned in a watery hole. With no natural light at night to keep the bogles at bay, the townsfolk live in mortal fear until Thomas decides to end the evil sprites' reign of terror. Gorgeously illustrated atmospheric images and a powerful folk narrative make this an ideal first horror picture book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A scary tale that is perhaps best not read at bedtime, but one which will definitely capture vivid imaginations and may spark a fair few creative writing juices flowing. Junior A lavishly produced book, with imaginative colour reconstructions, diagrams and photographs, all updated since it was originally published in 1994. It is an excellent buy for adults and children alike, who want to know more about one of the giants of our prehistoric past. Books for Keeps It is always exciting coming across a new picture book from this wonderful artist, and sure enough this latest title lives up to his highest standards. -- Nicholas Tucker Carousel --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars a delightfully goulish bedtime story, July 5, 2008

This review is from: The Moon in Swampland (Hardcover)
The moon is tempted to earth to see what the bogels are up to. She gets captured trying to save a boy from their clutches, and the moon disappears. The boy must figure out how to save her. The artwork is wonderfully creepy, and the clutching, grasping, creaking, slurping descriptions bring to life the will o' the wisps and the bog-filled countryside. Not overly firghtening but thrilling enough (especially the bogels) to introduce an old, spooky, English folktale to youngsters.
