About the Author

A journalist for one of the world's best-selling magazines, a reformed corporate lawyer, and a dedicated travel writer, Suzanne Nam is as comfortable interviewing Thailand's businessmen and politicians as she is asking a back-alley Chinatown chef for her secret recipe for duck noodles. Her mission is to give travelers the inside information that can turn a good trip to Thailand into a great one. You never know where Suzanne will turn up next. During the next political crisis, listen for her reports on the radio — she files for NPR's Marketplace — and Fox News Radio. If the surf's up, check for her on the waves of southern Thailand instead.

Like all meaningful things, Suzanne's career was more a product of evolution than of planning. She grew up in Cambridge, Massachusetts. She went to law school after college and practiced law for five years-enough time to produce a rainforest's worth of corporate paperwork. Then she gave it all up to study journalism at Columbia University. The world pulled her east, to London, the Middle East, and finally Bangkok, where she settled (for now at least). Suzanne's passions include food, photography, books, Bangkok's charismatic street dogs, and above all, writing.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book was my Bible for Thailand travel! Great for details, February 11, 2009
My friend and I used this book as our sole source of information for our 1 month trip to Thailand. It was priceless! Great insights into places to see, stay and eat from Bangkok, Chang Mai, to the beaches and really off the beaten path towns and villages. The food the author suggested was always delicious (and sometimes spicey!!) The train conductor even used our book to show some British travelers where to go in northern Thailand.

1.0 out of 5 stars One of the worst guide books I have ever owned, February 10, 2009
By
I am a great fan of Moon Handbooks and eagerly awaited this one. It was a huge disappointment. Actually there are only 517 pages not the 600 noted above. Perhaps the publishers left out the meat of the book in the missing pages. The accomodation and food sections are much too brief. Important towns such as Nong Khai near Laos are all but ignored except in the border crossing information, which also has incorrect listings. Mukdahan with another important crossing into Laos doesn't even get a mention, nor does the beautiful mountain village of Nan. I can usually find redeeming features in even a marginal guide book but it has been rough going here. Give it a pass.

Like some of the other books in the Moon series, this one is very thorough and helpful. I checked other series, and this one is up to date, and has a good spectrum of views, from back-packing to high-end vacations. Like the Belize
book from Moon, this was very useful for the trip I made to Thailand this year.
