5.0 out of 5 stars This is a fun, colorful and very interesting factual book that youngsters will grab for!, June 7, 2009
This review is from: The Moon (True Books: Space) (Paperback)
Even when you were little you hear nursery rhymes about how the cow jumped over the moon and if you peeked out a window at night you could sometimes even get a glimpse of it in the sky. It is "the brightest object in the night sky" so you probably won't have much trouble viewing it. Most children know about Apollo 11 and the space landing, but just how much do you really know about the moon? The moon is very close to the Earth and is only 238,855 miles away. It is smaller than the Earth and is only 2,159 miles in diameter. If you are into research and want to put this distance in perspective, look up how far New York is from San Francisco.

This is a "True Book." There are two sentences in the front of the book, but only one of them is true. If you read the book you'll find out the correct one and also learn a lot of things about the moon you may not have known about before. Our moon orbits (travels) around the Earth. We only have one moon, but in our solar system there are more than 162 of them. In this book you will learn that the moon has an effect on our tides, you'll learn about the 28 phases of the moon (why it appears to change shape), how long its orbit of the Earth takes, its composition, terrain, atmosphere (very interesting!) and a look at the space missions that have been sent to the moon from the United States.

This is a fun, colorful and very interesting factual book that youngsters will grab for. There are several books in this series you will be delighted with. There are many full color, enhanced photographs in this book, a marvelous illustration of our solar system, many interesting scattered facts, a great two-page spread of an astronaut and his gear, a page of statistics, important words, an index and additional recommended book and web site resources. Did you know that NASA is planning to "build a base on the moon where people can live?" Check back in 2020 to see how far they've gotten!
