Editorial Reviews

About the Author

Michael Blanding and Alexandra Hall met working five feet from each other as editors at Boston Magazine, where Alex covered food and fashion and Michael wrote about politics and crime. Since then, they've traveled the world together, dodging bicycles on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, breaking an axle on a safari in South Africa, and closing out nightclubs in Paris and Buenos Aires (not an easy feat!). But they've always loved returning to New England for its mix of natural beauty and enlightened culture. Michael and Alex pride themselves on having driven, hiked, canoed, or sailed every inch of the six-state region, ferreting out hidden storybook villages, backwoods museums, and underrated restaurants along the way. Alex grew up on Boston's South Shore and studied at Wheaton College and the Cordon Bleu Institute in Paris. She is now the Boston editor of DailyCandy, a website divulging the newest finds in food, fashion, and culture. Michael grew up west of Boston and attended Williams College. He is now a freelance writer for various magazines and journalism professor at Emerson College. He has won several awards for his writing, including twice being named a finalist for the prestigious Livingston Awards for Young Journalists. Together, Alex and Michael have written for publications including Conde Nast Traveler, Bon Appetit, Elle Decor, Continental, Delta Sky, Business Traveler, The Nation, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and AlterNet. They were married two years ago on the shores of beautiful Moosehead Lake, where Michael wore a kilt and Alex donned red heels and white feathers. They now live in the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain with their cat named Dog, their two-year-old son Zachary, and baby daughter Cleo, who have fast become the best-traveled babies in the world.

3.0 out of 5 stars Average guide, February 4, 2011
This book is one of many guides about Vermont. I would not rate this one as the "best" guide I've seen, but it is also not the worst. Not enough info on hotels, motels and B and B's, but good suggestions on nice country drives and of course the standard fare on all the "hot" tourist places around Vermont.

It is printed in larger print, so retired RV'ers coming to Vermont during leaf season might want to consider this book as their primary guide. After all, since they are driving an RV they won't need motel info anyway so this book will give them more of what they are looking for without having to sort through info that would seem irrelevant to an RVer anyway.

This book has szome nice photos and lots of great information about Vermont, my favorite state. I bought this to help me decide where I'd like to retire to in the future. A great resource. If you love a country atmosphere and beautiful landscape with lots of pines and awesome colors in autumn, you need to visit Vermont.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good information, January 4, 2011

We used this book (among others) on our fall foliage trip through Vermont. It has lots of good information and some decent pictures. I wouldn't use it to book your hotel (it has some suggestions, but not much), but as you're driving around the state it has helpful information on a lot of areas. The text is easy to read (especially for older eyes) and there are itineraries with maps to help you prioritize your excursions or plan your trip.
