About the Author

Michael Blanding and Alexandra Hall met working five feet from each other as editors at Boston Magazine, where Alex covered food and fashion and Michael wrote about politics and crime. Since then, they've traveled the world together, dodging bicycles on the streets of Ho Chi Minh City, breaking an axle on a safari in South Africa, and closing out nightclubs in Paris and Buenos Aires (not an easy feat!). But they've always loved returning to New England for its mix of natural beauty and enlightened culture. Michael and Alex pride themselves on having driven, hiked, canoed, or sailed every inch of the six-state region, ferreting out hidden storybook villages, backwoods museums, and underrated restaurants along the way. Alex grew up on Boston's South Shore and studied at Wheaton College and the Cordon Bleu Institute in Paris. She is now the Boston editor of DailyCandy, a website divulging the newest finds in food, fashion, and culture. Michael grew up west of Boston and attended Williams College. He is now a freelance writer for various magazines and journalism professor at Emerson College. He has won several awards for his writing, including twice being named a finalist for the prestigious Livingston Awards for Young Journalists. Together, Alex and Michael have written for publications including Conde Nast Traveler, Bon Appetit, Elle Decor, Continental, Delta Sky, Business Traveler, The Nation, The New York Times, The Boston Globe, and AlterNet. They were married two years ago on the shores of beautiful Moosehead Lake, where Michael wore a kilt and Alex donned red heels and white feathers. They now live in the Boston neighborhood of Jamaica Plain with their cat named Dog, their two-year-old son Zachary, and baby daughter Cleo, who have fast become the best-traveled babies in the world.

I used this book for my recent visit to Burlington and the Champlain Islands. It had some good leads but missed many off-the-beaten-track gems that luckily I was able to find using local newspapers and flyers when I arrived. It also had faulty info about a not-so-off-the-beaten-track tourist spot: the Ben and Jerry's factory. I really liked the small local maps in the book but was constantly cross referencing other sources and stumbling on businesses and sites that were well deserving of mention. I have used the Maine coast moon handbook many times and rely on it for hard to find information; this Vermont edition did not live up to my expectations.

This book has szome nice photos and lots of great information about Vermont, my favorite state. I bought this to help me decide where I'd like to retire to in the future. A great resource. If you love a country atmosphere and beautiful landscape with lots of pines and awesome colors in autumn, you need to visit Vermont.

MOON VERMONT is a great book focusing strictly on the Green Mountain State, and, as far as I know, the only one on Vermont alone. The book talks about everything the state has to offer, from historical sights to great natural beauty. As one reviewer said, the maps aren't super-wonderful, but the real reason you buy a book is for the text, not the maps, so that, to me, is not at all an issue. Buy this book in any form you can. I plan to get the hard copy in a little over a week, as well.

Moon Handbooks can always be relied on for comprehensive info on a state's sightseeing destinations, restaurants, and lodging facilities. I will be packing this book in my suitcase as my family heads for Vermont.

This book got me exactly what I needed. I wanted to have a map, know where to eat and where to stay and what cab company to call. This did all that. I'm sure it would do more if I had needed it for more.

This book is one of many guides about Vermont. I would not rate this one as the "best" guide I've seen, but it is also not the worst. Not enough info on hotels, motels and B and B's, but good suggestions on nice country drives and of course the standard fare on all the "hot" tourist places around Vermont.

It is printed in larger print, so retired RV'ers coming to Vermont during leaf season might want to consider this book as their primary guide. After all, since they are driving an RV they won't need motel info anyway so this book will give them more of what they are looking for without having to sort through info that would seem irrelevant to an RVer anyway.

Moon guides have moved up the scale, vs. Fodor/Frommer, little doubt. A guide that started off, as I seem to remember, offering more non-hotel/restaurant type data, i.e. culture, history etc has now elbowed itself more into F/F's territory. All right in both areas. Still prefer them to F/F, and this Vermont guide is fine.

However, recent releases are more apt to fall apart after litte use. The first ten to twenty pages fell out of the 2010 Vermont guide quite quickly. However, those pages are glossy un-informative, BS-laden pages, not really important. So, not a big deal, but if you're the type of user who roughs up yer stuff, bring a rubber band to keep it together, just in case.
