About the Author

Liza Prado was working as a corporate attorney in San Francisco when she decided to take a leap of faith and try travel writing and photography. Ten years later, she has coauthored 18 guidebooks and written numerous feature stories and travel blogs to destinations throughout the Americas. Her photographs have been published by Moon Travel Guides, Lonely Planet, and travel websites like Gogobot and

Since her first visit to the region more than a decade ago, the Yucatán Peninsula has remained one of Liza's favorite places to travel. For this assignment, she dived on coral reefs and snorkeled through cenotes, clambered on Maya ruins and paddled through mangroves, spied monkeys and tropical birds, explored colonial cities and cobblestoned towns, caught a few local bands, and listened to rock-star DJs—all with two kids in tow (well, at least part of the time).

A graduate of Brown University and Stanford Law School, Liza currently lives in Denver, Colorado, with husband and coauthor Gary Chandler and their children, Eva and Leo.

Gary Chandler grew up in a small ski town south of Lake Tahoe, California. He earned his bachelor's degree at UC Berkeley, and also studied abroad in Mexico City and Oaxaca. After graduation, Gary backpacked through much of Mexico and Central America, and later Southeast Asia, Europe, and the Caribbean. His first guidebook assignment was covering the highlands of Guatemala, which was followed by assignments in El Salvador, Honduras, Mexico, Brazil, the Dominican Republic, and elsewhere.

Gary has contributed to almost 30 guidebooks, many coauthored with wife and fellow travel writer/photographer Liza Prado. Between assignments, Gary earned a master's degree in journalism at Columbia University, worked as a news reporter and criminal investigator, and published numerous articles and blogs about travel in Latin America. He and Liza have two children and live in Colorado.

We have always used the Moon guides as our favourite travel book for exploring the Yucatan by car. We eagerly awaited this new edition and were so disappointed when it came. It has much less in it comapred to the previous issues, it is smaller and does not cover a lot of the "off the beaten" path places like the previous issues. Whereas it always stood leaps and bounds above its competitors it now seems to be another "okay" travel guide. All the nuances of the little quirky places to see are gone. Sorry, but this one has been a real let down for seasoned travellers to this amazing area.

Used this book the last time I went to the Yucatán and pretty much everything in it was exactly as described. Stayed at hotels that were recommended and all were great. Very useful for travel especially if you don't want to just go to the resorty type places and want to see the real Mexico.

Format: Paperback
I just want to illustrate how fast changes occur so that guidebooks may not be able to keep current - I checked several other books with the same problems, but this is the one I took with me on a recent vacation in Cancun. The American Express office listed in the book, and with address and phone number, no longer seems to exist. I walked by the address, saw the name on the window, but the store now sells fans and aircons. And the phone number relays info only in Spanish. Similarly, the city tourist office shown on the map by Ave. Cora near Ave. Tulum is no longer there. Also, one Monday I walked from a beach to the new Museum of the Maya in Cancun, open daily according to the guide book, only to read that the museum's hours are Tuesday through Sunday. Cancun seems to be a place of more rapid change than other tourist spots. The other guide books for Cancun had similar information that in just a short time seems to have been invali-dated.
I often rely on guide books when I travel and overall, find them helpful. Even the Cancun books did provide helpful info most of the time.
