From School Library Journal

Grade 1- 3 In this long bedtime mood-piece, a little girl, Firen, accuses the moon of taking her sleep; she resolves to ``go out in the night and find it.'' Outside, a moonbeam lands in her hands and becomes a magic flute with which she flies through the night. She encounters creatures of town, sea, and jungle in a dreamlike sequence illustrated in deep greens, blues, and violet. Firen herself has a pixie-ish, flower-fairy look, and is silvery-shiny with moonlight. The earthy robust humor of King Bidgood's in the Bathtub (HBJ, 1985) gives way in this book to an airy romanticism in both text and illustrations. Adult nostalgia for the magic of warm moonlit nights is evoked more strongly than the actual experience of them, giving this more adult than child appeal. Udry's Moon Jumpers (Harper, 1959) with Sendak's exhilarating double-page spreads is still the best choice for capturing a childlike vision of nighttime enchantment. More About the Author

AUDREY WOOD is the much-loved author of more than thirty books for children, including the bestselling The Napping House, Piggies, Heckedy Peg, and most recently, Piggy Pie Po, which she collaborated on with her husband, Don Wood.
She lives in Hawaii.

My first memories are of Sarasota, Florida in the winter quarters of the Ringling Brothers' Circus. I was one year old and remember it vividly. My father, an art student, was making extra income by repainting circus murals.

The people in the circus were my friends. I was bounced on the knee of the tallest man in the world and rocked in the arms of the fat lady who could not stand up. My first baby-sitters were a family of little people who lived in a trailer next to ours. They tAudrey2old me stories about the animals they worked with: Chi Chi the Chimpanzee, an elephant named Elder, and Gargantua the Gorilla.

My mother says I was a fast learner, always ahead of my age. My father taught me to swim before I could walk. I walked at seven months and climbed over a seven foot chain link fence when I was one year old. Everyone in the circus thought I was going to be a trapeze artist.

When I was two, I traveled with my parents to San Miguel de Allende, Mexico, where they studied art. Spanish became my second language. Because my mother read to me every day, I fell in love with books and was reading by age three.

My parents had two more girls, which made me the oldest sister. All of us were trained in the arts: music, dance, painting, and drama. We had a miniature stage in our basement, complete with light-bulb floodlights and a dusty red velvet curtain. Admission for the plays we produced was a bargain--twenty-five cents.

When I was in the first grade, I wanted to grow up to be an artist like my father. Then, in the fourth grade, I decided I'd like to be a children's book author. As an adult who writes and illustrates children's books, I have realized both my childhood ambitions.

I got in trouble in school once for crossing out my favorite author's name and putting in mine--Audrey Brewer instead of Dr. Seuss!

My great-grandfather, grandfather, and father were all professional artists. Since I am also a professional artist, there are four consecutive generations of artists in our family. However, I am the only female artist.

On our honeymoon, I read my new husband Don Wood the classic children's book entitled At the Back of the North Wind. Seven years later, we teamed up to create our first picture book together.

When our son Bruce Robert was two years old, I began to read picture books to him. He helped to remind me of my childhood ambitions. That's when I began to write children's books seriously.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book is wonderful, and beautifully illustrated., May 7, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Moonflute (Hardcover)
I really enjoyed this book. Even though it is a children's book I still greatly enjoyed the book, and it's illustrations. The story is great for all children, in fact it is one of my three-year-old sons favorites. The story of a little girl who is sent a magic flute that enables her to fly is one that captivates the hearts and imaginations of all children young, and old.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is not a little child's book, despite its look., October 17, 2005
This review is from: Moonflute (Hardcover)
This is a wonderful story with wonderful illustrations. However, don't be fooled by the author's name, it isn't for small children. It is for people who's thought-processes have progressed into the upper elementary level. I didn't catalog it in the primary section of my library, I cataloged it in the fiction area.

5.0 out of 5 stars My daughter got this book on her fifth Birthday from a Friend., August 24, 2009
This review is from: Moonflute (Hardcover)
My daughter got this book on her 5th Birthday from a friend and it very quickly became a favorite. That was April 1991 she is now 23 years old. We loved it so much that it became my email name ( moonflute@) my family reefers to me as moonflute as a pet name. My husband had a beautiful 14k gold moon neckless made for me w/a flute attached inset in the holes of the flute are my birthstone rose turmaline it turned out beautiful and I were it on a long gold chain with sweaters. People always admire it and then have to hear the story about how it came to be. I now have two granddaughters and they too have the book and they call me Nana-Moon. I'm 52yrs. now and moonflute is still my email. "Crazy" I know but I can't thank of a better nick name my family has made it stick:)
So we are fans of this book:)
