This is a gorgeous, imaginative picture book, beautifully produced and packaged by Candlewick Press and Laika, that includes a dvd of the award-winning short feature of the same name. Sadly there are no extras on the dvd nor any making-of information of any kind. While the book and short certainly stand on their own merits and compliment each other marvelously, I was hoping there would be more to this "Collector's Edition Gift Set".

This set comes in a box that folds open and the dvd is on one side and the book is on another. I just ordered it for my son for christmas, and I am so happy with the book. (I haven't watched the movie yet but I am very excited about it)My son is only 19 months old but we read together every night and the pictures in this book are pretty enough to hold his attention. I think this is going to be my sons favorite book when he is older. The story is very creative and the artwork is just spectacular. I have recommended this set to all my parent friends already and I have only had it for 2 days! This is a wonderful addition to any childrens library.

I bought this in October for our daughter's second birthday. It is now January, and this is still one of her favorite shows. She requests to watch it more nights than not as part of the 'ok it's time to start settling down for bed' ritual. Not only does our daughter enjoy the show, but after I don't know how many viewings neither my wife nor I are sick of it. Toddlers love repetition; finding something you can repeat without cringing every time it is requested is awesome.

The Collector's Edition comes with both a book and a DVD. Most of my comments are directed at the DVD. The book is very nicely put together and does add a little to the story, but the illustrations somehow do not capture the energy that the DVD has. I suspect it is the soundtrack by They Might Be Giants on the DVD that helps to keep things moving. My daughter enjoys books in general, but this one is almost never requested despite loving the video version of the story. By contrast she loves having Thomas the Tank Engine books read to her - and I know that's a result of having watched a couple of Thomas videos.

For the price, I believe that the Collector's Edition is a great value. The story is sweet and imaginative, the production values are excellent and overall it's fun. I didn't give it 5 stars because (a) I wouldn't say that this is a classic and (b) if you don't have children, you should be warned you're buying a children's book and an 8 min video; not a 'must have' under all circumstances.

Beautifully packaged. I bought it for my 2 grandsons assuming it would be a very high quality gift. The hard back book is very nice indeed and beautifully illustrated. The DVD was much shorter than I expected.

We not only love this book we are buying many more copies as Christmas Gifts. The illustrations, the art work, the colors are a beautiful experience for not only children but for the whole family! It is something that should be featured in your advertisements and windows.

My sister bought this book/DVD set for my kids. It is an amazing little story and DVD. So creative. Funny how we can watch it once a year and LOVE it every time. What an amazing find and gift!

I found this book/dvd set on a sale table at the grocery store. My 19 month old granddaughter loves it. She "reads" it to my mother and says "Mean guy. Go away mean guy. Shoo." when she gets to the pictures of the gargaloon. I have a string of tiny lights, battery operated, that we placed inside a screen mesh tea light holder and that becomes her jar of lightning bugs that she holds when she watches the movie or reads the book. It has become one her favorite books. It's a great story, and a twist on the classic man in the moon tale. The movie is good, although very short. I wish there would be a sequel so we could find out what happens to Moonboy and Earl.

It's a great book and a great DVD! The book reproduces faithfully the dvd's story, and is accompanied with beautiful drawings, painted carefully. The movie also has a funny style to it, with funny 3d animated characters. The story is simple, but effective, and now you'll know why sometimes the moon isn't shining on the sky!
Everyone who is starting in 3d modeling and animation should at least see the movie for inspiration!
There is also available a tutorial book, on how the movie was made, using Autodesk Maya.
I recommend it, for it's style and story!

I bought this for my two children, 5 & 2.5, mostly because the pictures appealed to me - and I am usually more stringent in my storyline requirements, but sometimes you just give in to pretty pictures.

I had originally hoped to just read the story and hide the DVD, but in reading, the book feels like something is missing. The story just does not hold up. The children "correct" the story when I read the book because they assume I am leaving bits out. You do really have to watch the DVD to fill in the gaps. My son, 5, is now practically addicted to the DVD. I think it is because overall the short (8 min) film is slow moving, music (by They Might be Giants, if that matter to you)is pretty soothing, the colors are overall calming, and the story is pure fantasy, yet complete: there is a sense of beginnings, endings as well as never ending.

If you are an adult, the story is a bit unfleshed out and simple. But it is an 8 minute kids animation. If you are a young child, it will, apparently, mesmerize you.

My little one loves this. She is enthralled by it, and although I wondered if the antagonist (the "Gargaloon") was too scary, she is thrilled by the drama. The DVD is beyond expectation; really I can't say enough about it. Far beyond most toddler programs. I guess the only complaint is that it's just not long enough!
