Not up to her usual high standards,
By Gemma "bookworm" (Alberta, Canada) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Moonlight Enchantment (Paperback)
From the back cover:
Deception and desire... Siam was no place for a proper young English lady to travel unchaperoned. But when a vicious rumor destryed her good name, Esme Montrose feld her father's Bangkok home rather than salvage her reputation by marrying a man she loathed. Running from the clutches of her hated fiance, she met the dashing Lord Ian Winthrop. And though she would have glady lingered in his arms, Winthrop wanted nothing to do with a girl of her tawdry reputation. Her happiness imperiled, Esme had to prove she wasn't a shameless doxy--or she would lose the only man she'd ever loved. And my review: As you've probably already guessed from the Sabrina Jeffries blog posts on this page, Deborah Martin and Sabrina Jeffries are the same author. Deborah Martin is the name she first published under before she wrote under the Sabrina Jeffries name. I only bought this book because I knew it was written by Sabrina Jeffries, who's books I love. The author does caution readers that her Deborah Martin books are much heavier and less humorous than her SJ books. And she absolutely right. Though I have enjoyed her DM books, I havn't found them as enjoyable as her SJ books. That being said, I still expect a good reader from this author. But "Moonlight Enchantment" was not up to her usual high standards, in my humble opinion. My main problem was with the characters. They just weren't likeable people as her characters usually are. He was a bit of a jerk, and she was a bit of a spoiled brat. It was difficult to cheer for either of them. I pushed myself through to page 100, but couldn't get any further. I still hadn't been able to warm up to the characters, and the plot wasn't gripping enough to keep me read. Since this is one of the author's earlier books, I will cut her a little slack. All I can say is, don't judge this book against her late Jeffries books. It doesn't measure up.
