Richard Moonlight, a former police officer, has a fragment of a self-inflicted bullet in his skull. It could induce a seizure or even death at any moment and it frequently short circuits his memory. For this latter reason, in addition to the cuts and scratches on the palms of his hands, Richard fears he may have had something to do with the death of his lover, Scarlet Montana.

Scarlet, the wife of Chief of Detective Jake Montana, Moonlight's former boss, is found dead in her bed shortly after she and Moonlight had a sexual interlude. Moonlight is called in to investigate by Mitchell Cain, his ex-partner. But Cain and Montana want a quick ruling of suicide.

Moonlight has done their bidding in the past in gratitude for the work and under-the-table pay. This time he asserts independence, a move which sets the stage for a world of trouble. Moonlight finds himself being set up as the fall guy for more than one crime.

Zandri provides a fast-paced noir thriller with plenty of action and surprising twists. He also paints a gritty portrait of Albany, his home city, reminiscent of William Kennedy.

OMG! What a read! Loved every word and could not put it down until the last word on the last page, then I returned to the beginning and re-read it all over again. Loved it even more than the first time around.
