4.0 out of 5 stars The last of the original Jim Reeves albums September 19, 2004
Format:Audio CD
"Moonlight And Roses" was the last album released during Reeves' lifetime (1964), and includes some songs which are clearly crossover recordings, while others fall more clearly in the country category.

On the "Moonlight And Roses" album, the title song is simply beautiful and incredibly mellow. "Mexicali Rose" is an old song I have long admired, though this is the first version of it that I find truly impressive...and a little country/Mexican oriented, as one might expect. In a similar vein is "Rosa Rio". Very much in the crossover mode is a very lovely version of the old big band standard "Oh What It Seemed To Be". I can't say much for this rendition of "Moon River", but perhaps because Perry Como and Andy Williams do it so wonderfully. And, "It's Only A Paper Moon"...well, not sure why they included that here; it seems out of place with an arrangement that probably satisfied few. A fairly unknown -- and haunting -- song by Irving Berlin, written when Berlin himself was grieving, is beautifully covered by Jim Reeves here -- "When I Lost You"; another great version is done by Perry Como just a year earlier. "There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder" is a great country tune. This half of the two-fer is a fine crossover blend with something to please almost everyone...except perhaps for hard core country-westerners.

After Reeves' death, RCA released "The Jim Reeves Way". Jim's rendition won't knock off that of Eddy Arnold's, but it's still nice. And Jim's version of "In The Misty Moonlight" has different attributes than Dean Martin's, although I'd give the edge here to Dino. "You'll Never Know" is a lovely song which Jim sings very nicely, but the arrangement of the horns here is a bit plodding. The "Nashville Sound" is very evident on "There's That Smile Again"...

4.0 out of 5 stars Gentleman Jim on the Job October 13, 2004
Format:Audio CD
I still have my old 33 1/3 vinyl of "The Jim Reeves Way", a bit tattered but the album is unscratched. I ordinarily wouldn't recommend ANY album where the singer covers songs that are virtual signature songs of other singers, even if they were recorded later in some instances. This CD has songs remembered as being sung by Gene Autry, Eddy Arnold, Jerry Wallace, Don Gibson and who knows else. I can recall only "Somewhere Along the Line" as a Reeves hit in America. I could be wrong. But his renditions of others' songs are so good and the non-commercial cuts, "Nickel Piece of Candy", "Where Do I Go to Throw a Picture Away?", "Maureen", and "Ek Verland (sp) Na Jou" ("I'm Missing You") from South Africa where he was enormously popular are so exceptional, I must recommend this. The songs need not conjure up specific memories. Jim could have sung from the telephone book and sounded good. I recommend this twofer highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Moonlight and Roses"/"The Jim Reeves Way" March 12, 2006
Format:Audio CD
This is a superb Jim Reeves Double Album. As a teenager in my homeland, I used to listen to the beautiful songs in this collection on two Long Playing Records decades ago for countless times. I have particularly enjoyed the sweet renditions such as Rosa Rio, Roses. There's A New Moon Over My Shoulder,In the Misty Moonlight,There 's that Smile Again,It hurts so much to see you go,I Can't Stop Loving you, A Nickel Piece Of Candy, Where Do I Go To Throw A Picture Away and Somewhere Along The Line. Jim's rich baritone voice is so charming. I am sure that he had the voice of an Angel and that our Heavenly Father in His infinite wisdom did lend Jim to us so that our lives could be happier.Jim , I believe , is now in Heaven singing with the Angels. All Lovers of Jim Reeves Songs should buy this album. It is a priceless gem.Enjoy!

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful Recording! December 30, 2007
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I wasn't planning to buy this recording. I was looking for Jim Reeves' Christmas album and found Moonlight and Roses, along with a number of other Jim Reeves' recordings. Years ago, I had a couple dozen of his records but couldn't listen to them any more because I no longer had a turntable. When I stumbled upon Moonight and Roses, I decided to treat myself. It's wonderful! I hope to buy some more of his recordings soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Quality - Beautiful Sound - Love Jim Reeves! March 2, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
I purchased this for my parents and waited patiently for them to play this CD. The sound was amazing, superior quality and Jim Reeves sounded as if he were there with us in the room! I was worried as the CD had to be imported from Germany, but that made no difference. This brought back many great memories for both my parents and myself as a voice of this magnitude is seldom heard anymore and songs, written from the heart, are almost extinct!
