Smooth Jazz saxophonist Steve Cole has built a strong reputation of one of the genre's most accomplished performers.
Usually he takes a funkier slant on things.
'Moonlight' is a romantic take on the 'American Songbook' though 'Long And Winding Road' is a Lennon and McCartney composition.
My personal favourites are 'Undun', 'The Look Of Love' and 'The Masquerade Is Over'.
I came to know his style, when I heard the fantastic track "Just the Two of Us", with the incomparable vocalist Ms Regina Belle and legendary arranger/pianist/keyboardist George Duke, from the beautiful tribute album To Grover With Love.

Track Listing:
1. Moonlight
2. You Can Close Your Eyes
3. I'm Afraid The Masquerade Is Over
4. Undun
5. Angel
6. You Don't Know Me
7. Cry Me A River
8. Look Of Love, The
9. Long And Winding Road.

"Moonlight" debuts at # 23 of the Billboard Jazz Chart. Week of February 19, 2011.

Steve Cole is one of my favorite sax players. This is his 6th release and I own them all. Make no mistake, on this new release his playing is as impeccable as always and there are flashes of great piano work on some tracks. The production on the CD is also immaculate. However, I have a couple of really big problems with this CD...1) His last release was in 2006, so after nearly five years, all he can serve up is a platter of COVERS? 2) Thanks to the inclusion of an orchestra, replete with strings (whose idea was that?), the tunes are all ultra-schmaltzy and stupefyingly boring. I mean, it's not an easy task to turn the Guess Who's "Undun" into a schmaltzy mid-tempo ballad, but this crew succeeds. It seem's that Steve is attempting to tap the same schmaltz mine that Kenny G and Chris Botti have been mining for years. Trouble is...the mine is tapped out and Kenny G doesn't even do this stuff anymore. Fortunately, there is a new Sax Pack CD in the works, so maybe we can hear some REAL Steve Cole this year. Redemption is only your next project away, Steve, so I recommend packing up the orchestra and sending them off to work with Chris Botti, get a band with a pulse together and start wailing like you did on your first five CDs...and I wouldn't wait five years to get to the task.

I have to agree with the previous review. Steve Cole and Brian Culbertson together made magic. There are several artists that make you want to buy their CD because you know it's going to be great. Steve Cole used to be one of those artists. However, the last couples of CDs have been disappointing and have just ended up on the back seat of the car.Moonlight
