From losing his master's chickens to burning down the mayor's house, young wizard-to-be Tristan's adventures always seem to go wrong . . . until a talking cat named Thomas adopts him!

Together they may be able to replace the chickens, set things right with Tristan's wizard master . . . and start to discover Tristan's true powers.

A delightful fantasy for the young and young at heart!

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

"A young wizard's apprentice gets into trouble in this sweet, rather old-fashioned, short fantasy novel. A foundling raised by his wizard master, young Tristan has led an isolated life, and is frustrated because he has no friends and can't do anything right, even small tasks like frying fish, drying clothes, or cleaning the hearth going dreadfully wrong. Then a talking cat with a practical attitude comes into his life and helps him when things go wrong once his master goes away for a few days and problems snowball, until Tristan has to set out into the forest on a quest--to find a hive of bees. The most magical moments come when he encounters a unicorn trapped in the swamp, but the story's real charm is in the down-to-earth details of dealing with things like chickens and foxes, which ought to appeal to fantasy fans both young and old." --Carolyn Cushman, Locus

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite author seeks a younger audience, June 14, 2001

This review is from: Moonlight (Paperback)
Susan Dexter is my favorite author. After several novels (the Ring of Allaire series, now out of print but well worth searching for) she has changed her target slightly and written for a young teen audience. The book is only 128 pages long, the print is reader friendly (nicely spaced) and the plot has been trimmed of excess complexities. But the characters remain. Readers of the Ring of Allaire will enjoy the chance to see the beginning for Tristan the clumsy apprentice, Thomas the sarcastic familiar (a talking cat only Tristan is forced to listen to, though his advice can be useful) and finally a chance to see Tristan's long suffering master, Blais the sorcerer (a cameo, alas).

Tristan gets lead into a great quest of wizardry, and a decision that will shape his young destiny, by the merest of hapstance. Is it a curse of bad luck? Wild wizard's chance? Or just fate lending a hand?

This review is from: Moonlight (Paperback)
I have read all of Susan Dexter's Esdragon books, so it was thrilling to find this prequel to the Ring of Allaire. Moonlight is a tale of a much younger Tristan, a bumbling apprentice wizard for whom nothing ever seems to go right. This Tale has many little touches which tie it in with the previous trilogy. We see how he meets Thomas the cat, where he finds his silver Unicorn belt buckle, and even the origins of Minstrel. We meet Blaise, his long-suffering wizard master. We follow Tristan on an adventure spurred on by one mishap after another which ends in Tristan saving a Unicorn. With the Unicorn's power, he could be the most powerful wizard in the world, but the Unicorn yearns for freedom. Tristan has to make a heart-wrenching decision... If you like this, try her others: The Ring of Allaire, The Sword of Calandra, and The Mountains of Channadran.
