Ms. Wegner has written a bold feast of forbidden desires that will challenge one's own established convictions and dares you to embrace the unforgivable. The intriguing & thought-provoking plot, the fascinating imagery and the tantalizing & breathlessly romantic character interactions center around Fitzwilliam Darcy courting & winning the hand of Elizabeth Bennet-but there is much mystery that surrounds our proud & very masculine hero. One is torn between yielding to the sheer ecstasy of the moment to questioning the justice & moral implications of Darcy's goals & desires. Passionately written and wildly introspective, an absolute must-have for any P&P fan! I loved it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Welcomed Relief, September 14, 2009

This review is from: Moonlighting (Paperback)
With all the vampire stories being written, this book was a welcomed relief. Don't get me wrong, I like the vampire stories, and bought one recently, but I loved this story where Darcy is a werewolf. The bloodlines have been diluted enough by taking human wives that Darcy's pack is now quite civilized. They do change, especially when the moon is full, but only into wolves who kill small animals to eat, rather than into beasts who kill humans.

I adored this Darcy; he is loving, kind, compassionate, gentle and passionate. He, in turn, loves Elizabeth Bennet as only our fantasy Darcy can, but because of pack rules, he marries her without revealing what he is. He then takes her to Pemberley, which is located in the far north, just at the Scottish border, instead of Derbyshire. Once there she feels isolated and unhappy. She is allowed to go into the village, but because she is the alpha female, she can't become too close to the others.

Elizabeth does love and desire her husband, but she is puzzled and confused by him, and what is happening around her . She senses he is keeping too many secrets from her. Too many mysterious events are occuring, and no one will tell her anything. When she becomes pregnant, she finally discovers what her husband is, and she is shocked and angry. What she does then is predictable.

This is a love story, but it also brings up a moral issue. Males in the pack either marry a human female under false pretense, or they simply steal their human mates. Female wolves are different and the rules that bind men do not always pertain to the women.

I recommend this book for more than one reason: (1) it is different from anything I've read or seen on the market, (2) it grips your imagination, and you'll have a hard time putting it down until you've finished, (3) it is a beautiful love story, and last but not least, it is well written.

I thought the premise of this book was a great idea, especially as it ties in with the popularity of vampire and werewolf stories today. Even the storyline was well thought out and for the most part, well written.

However, I did find myself getting more annoyed than usual with the many typos and errors in grammar. I admire and appreciate the self-publishing practices of the authors who participate because I think it allows people with great stories to tell to do so without the drawn out business of finding a publishing house and whatnot - but it would be even better if the authors spent a bit more time reviewing their manuscripts before putting them on the market.

All in all, I would suggest this book to people who enjoy the variations of the beloved Darcy and Elizabeth story because as I said, it is in essence and good story. Just beware of the typos and lingering articles.

4.0 out of 5 stars Howling Fun!, December 1, 2009

I thoroughly enjoyed this variation on "Pride & Prejudice." It was imaginative without sacrificing Elizabeth or Darcy's personalities. The new characters introduced fit well in the context of the story; my particular favorite was Lord McGarth (I may not have the spelling correct) who is destined for Georgiana. Overall, it was a very enjoyable read.

However, this book would greatly benefit from a good proofreader. I found several instances where sentences contained repeated words (ex. "the the") or misplaced phrases (ex. "she did like have liked..."). There were also instances of missing punctuation marks.

Also, the author failed to resolve several of the secondary plot lines she created. For example, a rift develops between Jane and Elizabeth and we are left wondering if the sisters, who have always been close, overcome the issue that divides them. One small criticism I did have concerning Jane's character was how did Jane go from being so accepting and never thinking badly of anyone to being suspicious and untrusting? Elizabeth was always the doubting Thomas; Jane was the eternal optimist.

I would also suggest to the author that the epilogue should be written at least one year (if not more) into the future rather than a few days. By doing so, she could address some of the unresolved plot lines.

All in all, the book is worthy of joining the growing library of "Pride & Prejudice" variations. It was howling good fun!

2.0 out of 5 stars 2 1/2 stars - Not bad but NOT a P&P variation, October 24, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Moonlighting (Paperback)
To be clear, the characters and circumstances in this book bear no resemblance to the people and events in 'Pride and Prejudice.' Elizabeth is hesitant, Jane is suspicious, Bingley is bold, and Darcy smiles too much. They do, however, share some past experiences with their P&P counterparts; and the reader is expected to have read the original and already be familiar with all of the characters and events. For example, Lady Catherine is mentioned; but there is no explanation of who she is. (Her daughter Anne apparently does not exist in this alternate universe.)

There is no pride - Darcy is desperate to marry Elizabeth. There is no prejudice - Elizabeth agrees to marry him in spite of her doubts and the warnings of her family. Evidently the author claimed the character's names just so she could garner the attention of P&P fans. It worked.

In the early chapters, so much of it was so ridiculous it literally made me laugh out loud. I even considered giving it up altogether; but I figured I have read so many awful variations, what's one more? I am glad I stuck it out.

Once the novel gets past all of the P&P wannabe nonsense and Darcy and Elizabeth go to "Pemberley" (in quotation marks because it bears absolutely no resemblance to Austin's Pemperley in any way - including location), this becomes a compelling werewolf story. There were several plot points that were so interesting, in fact, that I wish the author would have given them more attention. ****SPOILER ALERT*** I also did not think that Elizabeth's behavior after her attempted escape rang true. I would have preferred to see her not recovered with such ease and to be on the edge of despondency when she is caught. I would also like to see the ongoing friction between Jane and Elizabeth developed more. The Epilogue is not an epilogue at all; it is just the last chapter.

As per usual for Wegner novels, this one is in desperate need of proofreading. Persistent misuse of words and commas, plenty of typographical errors, and frequent missing articles.

Sexual content rated R.

I greatly enjoy reading this P&P love story and highly recommend it. I love the whole concept and how Ms. Wegner carried it out. Fitzwilliam Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet characterization are fascinating and has a very sweet ending.

4.0 out of 5 stars Suspenseful, Dramatic, and Romantic, June 8, 2011
This review is from: Moonlighting (Paperback)
While at Netherfield, tending her sister Jane, Elizabeth encounters a large, black, yet friendly dog - well, he really looks more like a wolf than a dog. Elizabeth spends much time petting, playing with, and talking to this docile creature. He is very intelligent and seems to understand what she says. Although Elizabeth is delighted with her new friend she can't help but wonder: Where did he come from? What type of dog is he? To whom does he belong?

Elizabeth soon learns that her canine friend belongs to none other than Mr. Darcy, a man she despises. What she doesn't learn is that Mr. Darcy is a werewolf, and the dog that she is so fond of is actually Mr. Darcy in his lupine form!

In this exhilarating paranormal Pride and Prejudice retelling our brooding and reserved Mr. Darcy, is a werewolf (part werewolf actually, his mother was human). He is the Alpha Male and the leader of his pack located in Cumbria, a county just a few miles south of Scotland. Even though Mr. Darcy knows that he is in love with Elizabeth Bennet, he stays away because according to the laws of the pack, Darcy cannot reveal that he is a werewolf until after Elizabeth marries him. Fraught with apprehension and yearning Darcy must decide if he can purposely deceive the woman he loves. Will Elizabeth agree to be his wife? Will she forgive him once she learns his secret? Will she be happy in the isolated and cold estate of Pemberley surrounded by a pack of werewolves?

I took great pleasure in reading Moonlighting! The concept was so wholly unique and the plot was full of surprises. With deceptions, marital discord, escape attempts, and plotted kidnappings this novel is a thrilling adventure from start to finish. In addition, I liked meeting all the new characters Ms. Wegner created. Lord McGarth, Darcy's friend and fellow werewolf who wants to marry Georgiana, was quite intriguing!

My one small quibble for this novel is with the portrayal of Elizabeth. She was portrayed fairly accurately in the first half the book, but in the second half of the book she seemed to loose some of those charming and playful qualities we all know and love. Sometimes I felt this Elizabeth was a little too hostile, sometimes a little too immature, and sometimes a little too accepting. Suffice it to say, something was just a little off for me in this Elizabeth's character make-up.

Nonetheless, I greatly enjoyed reading this riveting and inventive novel and I am very happy to have it in my collection! If you are interested in seeing Mr. Darcy howl at the moon, than this is a book for you!

Note: Due to several intimate and romantic scenes in this novel, I'd recommend this book for Mature Audiences only.

Interesting spin on P & P. I don't review books often, but I have to this time. This plot is enjoyable with some really humorous moments. If you can ignore the poor editing and grammer, you should enjoy it. There is 1 line that made me write this review; if you are familiar with Mrs. Bennett (Jane and Lizzy's Mother), you may laugh as I did. Here is the line:*Spoiler Alert* "Dearest Lizzy, I knew, I always knew that you were not so bookish and intelligent for nothing!" Hope you enjoy the read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great take on P&P, April 5, 2011

This review is from: Moonlighting (Paperback)
I really enjoyed this book and could barely put it down. I loved how the characters seemed believable. Throughout the meat of the book I must say I was team Darcy, but I will not give for what I am talking are a may present a spoiler. Also, toward the end the book is like a thriller move, really enjoyed the ride. I loved how Darcy was supposed to be the werewolf and he was so patient and kind with Elizabeth. I did not like Jane's character at all, she did not seem like the Jane I recall, but it fit. Jane seemed a bit up tight in this tale. I really did not miss Caroline Bingley or the other characters of the tale. And this book is of a mature nature for the those weak of heart.

4.0 out of 5 stars Mr. Darcy's True Nature, November 16, 2010
By
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Moonlighting (Paperback)
If you have no problem with playing with the concepts of Pride and Prejudice to the extent of a fantasy adventure you will probably like "Moonlighting". I have often thought that the personality of Fitzwilliam Darcy was secretive and changeable and would lend itself to a more adventurous story and Ola Wegner has provided such a story. The brave nature of Elizabeth will be tested in this tale as she has to face circumstances completely out of her control. I really am a fan of Ola Wegner's stories and this is one of my favorites. Yes, she has played loosely with the rules of English grammar and needs a spell checker for non English speaking writers, but she definitely has a style and rhythm of writing which I can't pass up particularly with a story so provocative as this. I don't want to give away the plot but this is a FANTASY and I loved it. There are some unusual sexual scenes in the tale therefore, I would not recommend to anyone under 18.
