Sometimes a girl just has to get dirty

The first in the Bree MacGowan Series

Winner of the 2009 Daphne De Maurier Award for excellence in Mystery and Suspense, Mainstream division.

"... it was hard to put this one down! ...George’s heroine is a fictional treasure that is strong-willed, self sufficient, and not easily derailed!" - BJ Scott, Manchester Examiner

TROUBLE FOLLOWS SOME WOMEN…

Bella Bree MacGowan is your average country girl. She works two jobs to support her farm and the menagerie of stray animals that accumulate there; she’s almost always covered in mud; and everyone in her small town of South Royalton, Vermont, feels free to comment on everything from her love life ("That Jim just isn't right for you!") to her expired inspection sticker ("Better get that car looked at!"). Is there any such thing as privacy anymore?

… BUT IT FELL IN LOVE WITH BREE MACGOWAN.

When Bree finds a dead body at the five-star resort where she moonlights as a maid, her life careens out of control. Her lawyer boyfriend, Jim, dumps her; the surly and sensual investigating officer, Lieutenant Miles Brooks, keeps giving her the beady eyeball; and a reporter at the paper where she works names Bree as the primary suspect in the murder! Can your average hard-working country girl prove her innocence, rein in a love life gone wild, and maintain her sanity all at the same time?

5.0 out of 5 stars Great character! January 14, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
Bree is a character that I liked from the first few "pages". Complicated with a few issues, it's like peeling one layer of her at a time, as you get to know her. She does dumb things, makes bad choices, but is a good person. Her many pets who "own" her, are believable. She's the only one who doesn't seem aware of how appealing she is, to the many men in her life. Great read! I can hardly wait to see what trouble she gets into next!

3.0 out of 5 stars Good but . . . October 10, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Amazon Verified Purchase
If you can't handle reading kindle books with atrocious editing (formatting, spelling, context mistakes, et al) you probably want to skip this one or try the paperback version.

However, if you can get past the editing debacle, I think Kate George has good story telling abilities.

I will read the next book, California Schemin', with the hopes the story is still there and she found a better editor - will have to get from the library though, hate paying for a book that has so many errors.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fast-paced and fun September 12, 2009
Format:Paperback
Kate's first, award-winning novel moves along with lots of action and romance. No graphic violence and no danger to the many animals appearing throughout the story. Different for the heroine as she gets beaten, stabbed and muddy while looking for the other "most likely to have committed murder" person. A good fast-moving read for an evening's entertainment with lots of twists and surprises.

It may not be Nobel Prize winning, but it's got my vote for beach reads! Kate George writes an easy, smoothe story with a great set of characters. Read more

2.0 out of 5 stars Horrible editing!
I really like the actual story and usually I can overlook some punctuation/editing errors. But this book was over the top for them...it was just too distracting. Read more

More About the Author

Kate George is the author of the popular Bree MacGowan mystery series, which started when she took up a dare to write a book; the result was Moonlighting in Vermont. She was born in Sacramento, California, was raised on a ranch until the age of eight, and graduated from UC Davis with a degree in anthropology. She is currently working on her MFA. She has been, in no particular order, a paste-up tech, a motorcycle safety instructor, a waitress, an actor, a housekeeper at a swank hotel and the assistant to the dean of a medical school, all of which provide plenty of fodder for her novels. Currently, she lives in an old farmhouse in the backwoods of Vermont with her husband, four kids, three rescue dogs, and a *squirrel that lives in her bedroom wall, where by day she teaches and by night, she dreams up wild adventures for her characters. Visit her at kategeorge.com, or contact her at kate@kategeorge.com. She always loves to hear from readers!

*At least we think it's a squirrel. It could be a chipmunk, vole, fishercat, woodchuck or even a bat. But we've SEEN a squirrel so that's what we're betting on.
