Editorial Reviews

Over the past year, Ryan McGinley and his crew explored huge underground caves, venturing into unknown territory and seeking out spectacular natural spaces, -some previously undocumented. The title, "Moonmilk", alludes to the crystalline deposits found on the walls of many caves; it was once believed that this substance was formed by light from celestial bodies passing through rock into darkened worlds below. The series, a departure from Ryan's iconic images of the past, firmly places Ryan as one of the most innovative and influential artists of a generation! Moonmilk is published to coincide with his first London show at the Alison Jacques Gallery.

Update to original review posted below: be sure to pick up the 2nd edition instead of the first because it contains an additional photo that was left out of the first edition. Yes, unless you covet a book labeled as a first edition, you are better off with the second edition because it contains one extra image. The second edition was also limited to 1,000 copies. The second edition is clearly noted as the "second edition" in the book.

Moonmilk contains all of the photographs for McGinley's 2009 solo exhibition at the Alison Jacques Gallery in London. Limited to an edition of 1,000, Moonmilk is the latest evolution in McGinley's exploration of self-aware individuals performing in front of the camera, this time in the surreal world of underground caves. According to the official gallery press release: "Over the last year, McGinley and his crew explored huge caves underground, venturing into unknown territory, seeking out spectacular natural spaces, some previously undocumented. The title of the show "Moonmilk" alludes to the crystalline deposits found on the walls of many caves; it was once believed that this substance was formed by light from celestial bodies passing through rock into darkened worlds below." These are perhaps the most elaborate of McGinley's images and an exciting new body of work. The photographs are well reproduced in full color. Highly recommended for McGinley collectors. Don't delay in picking up a copy as the book has a fairly small print run and is sure to sell out quickly.
