Book Description

November 2, 2003
Volume 1 in the Children of the Rock Duology

In a world under three moons, in the courts and villages of three kingdoms, the fates of the Dreamers are at stake. Only Dreamers can bend the power of the gods and perform the magic that holds chaos at bay. The Dreamers are always few in number, born of rare unions between ruling Shapers and peasant Keepers. The Shapers no longer believe in magic. The practical Keepers no longer see any need for it . . . Princess Vray of Rhenlan is a Shaper, sent into exile. Dael, captain of the royal guard of Rhenlan, is a Keeper who carries the seeds of a revolution in his heart . . . can the rare and tender love so necessary for the birth of Dreamers blossom in time to save their world? Marguerite Krause and Susan Sizemore have created a world rich with intrigue, magic, and emotion. Prepare to be swept into a fantasy world unlike any other. . . the world of the Children of the Rock.

Susan Sizemore is the proud mother of a spoiled mutt with a remarkable resemblance to the ancient Egyptian god Anubis. Marguerite Krause is married, and the mother of two brilliant, award-winning children . . . who are both finally in college! (20021201)

Review

"From a darkly humorous tale of the power of words (Death and the Librarian) to a never-before-published response to events of September 11 (Ilion), Friesner's 12 stories illustrate the author's acutely sensitive vision of wonder in the everyday world... Known primarily for his 'Star Wars' novels... Zahn's short stories also deliver strong plots and memorable characters... Zebrowski's many novels (e.g. Macrolife) mark him as a visionary as well as a master of hard sf. The ten short stories collected in In the Distance provide a benchmark of his creativity... the author expands his concept of the human condition to embrace the stars. Part of Five Star's continuing commitment to showcasing the short fiction of the genre's most prominent author's, these three volumes belong in most libraries where short sf is popular."
-- Library Journal (December 2002) (Library Journal 20020615)

"...Part of Five Star's continuing commitment to showcasing the short fiction of the genre's most prominent authors, these three volumes (Death and the Librarian and Other Stories/ Star Song and Other Stories/ In the Distance, and Ahead in Time) belong in most libraries where short sf is popular."
-- Library Journal (December 2002) (Library Journal )

"Four more titles in Five Star's new series (God Is an Iron and Other Stories/ Generation Gap and Other Stories/ The Lady Vanishes and Other Oddities of Nature/ Suppose They Gave a Peace and Other Stories) of short fiction by noteworthy sf authors offer a variety of tales that illustrate the depth and staying power of the genre...Most of the stories in these volumes have only appeared in periodicals. Libraries wishing to augment their sf or short fiction collections should consider any of them."

5.0 out of 5 stars Grand epic fantasy a Must Read!, August 30, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Moons' Dreaming (CD-ROM)
This book hooked me from the opening paragraph, immediately drawing me in to the fascinating world, and the emotional struggles of an honorable man serving men without honor. I particularly liked how the same basic conflict (disbelief and turning away from the old ways) was played out among the three sets of princes/princesses in three different ways, allowing for a very in depth exploration of the subject, and the acknowledgment that there is no black or white, only shades of gray. Abandoning the laws is not the answer, but neither is slavish adherence and blind belief.

The fantasy world was a delight, the characters engrossing, and the story compelling. This is a must read book for both fans of fantasy and of romance.
