Book Description

June 1, 2001
Ghillie Basan and her husband decided to leave their home in Edinburgh and set up in a remote hillside cottage at the foot of the Cairngorms. Aiming to restore the cottage and build photographic studios out of the barns, the pair are constantly thwarted by the weather—bold, dramatic, and sometimes treacherous. But the beauty of the landscape almost compensates for the bleakness of such an existence, and the story is peppered with tales of whisky-breathed farmers, boiler engineers with a penchant for dressing in cowboy suits, the birth and death of lambs, the night skies and the northern lights, mothers-in-law arriving in high heels, getting stuck in snow drifts, and finally, two babies.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

People don't move to the Braes of Glenlivet, the author and her husband, Jonathan, were told; people move out. Nevertheless, the Basans were determined to follow their dream of opening a photographic workshop in the remote Scottish Highlands. It was a monumental undertaking: their new home of Corrunich was 2 miles from the nearest telephone, 1 mile from the mailbox, 10 miles from the closest village. Corrunich had no electricity, apart from the power supplied by the household generator, which failed to work for six months. Almost immediately after moving in, they were buried by snowstorms. But in time, the determined Basans made a home for themselves and became part of Highland culture. It would seem impossible to make a living from writing and photography in such a remote spot, but they did it, taking on freelance photography assignments and eventually publishing an improbably popular book about Turkish food. This engaging account should appeal to that corner of the travel-lit market that savors "let's fix up a house in the wilds" stories. David Pitt
