Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Edie Spence, nurse to the paranormal, falls victim to her own messianic complex in Alexander's entertaining sequel to Nightshifted. After Edie witnesses a hit-and-run and tries to save the victim—who turns out to be the werewolf king—she is hunted by strange weres. Is it a matter of pack politics, or is it about Edie's agreement to be the ceremonial ambassador of the living vampire Anna? Edie's story is driven by her inability to say no to Anna, her junkie brother, the werewolf king's daughter, or even a ghost-possessed vampire cyborg servant. Her casual attitude toward sex ( I'm going to take you like I own you, Edie, says her lover; Just for tonight, she replies) leads to some steamy scenes of stress relief, and her determination to remain emotionally aloof is wonderfully undermined by her developing friendships. Edie's growing personality—and the cliffhanger ending—will keep fans hooked to the trilogy's conclusion. Agent: Michelle Brower, Folio Literary Management. (Dec.)

"Cassie Alexander’s first book about Nurse Edie Spence is dark and energetic. You’ll really enjoy it; I’m looking forward to reading the others in the series."—Charlaine Harris, New York Times bestselling author of the Southern Vampire Mysteries

Moonshifted starts some big changes for our heroine and I cannot wait to read more.” – Between Dreams and Reality

Moonshifted is even better than the first. There was more action, more snarkiness, and even more sexiness. I can’t wait to read more from Alexander and more about Edie Spence.” – Book Sake

“Steamy and entertaining…Edie’s growing personality—and the cliffhanger ending—will keep fans hooked.” –Publishers Weekly

You can feel the life pulse through this novel.  I highly recommend Moonshifted if you are interested in a fast paced urban fantasy with mystery, mayhem, family drama, secrets, sex, lies, politics and a very human, very relatable, protagonist who faces the supernatural and doesn’t back down or give up!  I am eagerly waiting for the 3rd book. I need more!” –The Book Tart

“A fast, sexy return to the utterly unique world of Edie Spence.  Moonshifted takes the world Cassie Alexander presented in Nightshifted and adds a whole new level of danger and intrigue.  Absolutely recommended.” --Seanan McGuire, award-winning author of Ashes of Honor

“The best debut  I've read all year. Nightshifted is simply amazing!” Kat Richardson, bestselling author of the Greywalker series

"Nightshifted’s main character, nurse Edie Spence, has a distinctive, appealing, and no-nonsense style that you won’t quickly forget. Add to that a paranormal population that needs medical care for some very odd reasons, and you have a winner of a debut novel." --Kate Elliott, author of the Cold Magic series

"Fresh, exciting, dark, and sexy, Nightshifted is excellent urban fantasy that grabs you by the throat and pulls you along for a wild ride. Cassie Alexander is an author to watch!" --Diana Rowland, author of Mark of The Demon

“Medical drama and vampire cold wars intersect in this solid urban fantasy debut.  Alexander’s zombies are particularly well designed, and the hospital environment adds an intriguing additional dimension.” –Publishers Weekly

“I loved this book. What a breath of fresh air!  It’s filled with fascinating characters, including an enigmatic zombie firefighter, weres, shapeshifters, and of course, vampires. A memorable scene with a STD afflicted dragon (yup) had me on the edge of my seat, the budding romance with Ti (zombie firefighter!) is sweet and tender, and I just plain loved hanging out with Edie. Nightshifted is a very strong start to what promises to be a wonderful new series!” –My Bookish Ways

“Edie is a fun character with heart and charisma, making it easy to fall for her and want to see her succeed in all of her adventures, whether they be dealing with paranormal patients, evil vampires, or potential lovers. If you like your urban fantasy to have a dose of romance, then Nightshifted is for you.  Highly recommended.” –The Debut Review

“I really enjoyed the new type of monster mythologies introduced in NIGHTSHIFTED. I especially liked the idea that you need a certain amount of blood exposure before becoming a full fledged vampire. I can’t wait to read more about the Y4 wing of County Hospital’s residents and this strange new world when the next book comes out.” –All Things Urban Fantasy

“Alexander’s first novel launches a new series that should appeal to fans of medical thrillers as well as urban fantasy.”–Library Journal

“Alexander has created a wonderful world of paranormal that we don't usually get to see. Edie Spence is so wonderfully human in a world of ghost CD players, vampires, zombies, weres, shifters and crappy pay checks. Read this book and you will be swooning (I promise), yelling and laughing all at the same time.  A must read indeed!”  --Bodice Rippers, Femme Fatales and Fantasy

"Edie Spence series is for sure one of the best UF books around." ~Under the Covers

Moonshifted is the second installment of Edie Spence series. Ms. Alexander delivered another well written and engaging story. She managed to make this book even better with a more detailed but complex plot. I devoured it in about two and half days which is big for me considering I'm a slow reader.

Edie continues to get her nursing experience working at a secret unit called Y4 where her patients are of the supernatural kind. If you read Nightshifted (book1), you know that Edie is a special nurse. She is a patient advocate and she goes above and beyond her duties. She is good at what she does and can handle high stress level situations. Well, she definitely proved that here when chaos occurs at her work as well as her personal life.

The world building is more in-depth in this installment. Ms. Alexander definitely widened the world, it's not just limited to the patients in Y4 but even beyond the hospital walls. Edie is more involved with the faction of vampires' and the wolves' hierarchies during the overturn of leaders. Along with the caring for a patient who happens to be the Alpha of his pack; she also promised to be responsible and be a part of a vampire coronation ceremony. Both factions are involved in a power struggle that is of course brewing into war. Edie just finds herself in the midst of all the chaos. I'm telling you, they all seem to flock to her for help. While she does well with this type of chaos, I can't say the same for her love life.

She still doesn't have one. After her zombie boyfriend left her she just can't seem to shake him off.

I am so glad that I had the good judgment to give this author another try. I had been slightly unhappy with the last book but had seen the potential and this second novel is fantastic! If I was unhappy with the lack of world building in the last book, the author made up for that lack in this one. I now know so much more about Edie's world and it really helps to get the reader `into' the story/

Things are going tremendously weird in Edie's' life lately...the holidays...a were hit and run right in front of her - a were-war (well sort of) , Vampires' ascending and being Anne's Ambassador and sex but no romance. Jake (Edie's brother) sort of going legitimate. Things going on behind the scenes and even a new type of creature. Well a self-made one at any rate. Wow. It was enough to nearly boggle the mind! I truly loved it. The mystery within the mystery was great.

I was kept breathless until the very end of the book and the surprise climax...well...let's just say it really comes as a surprise to me. I'm so not sure where Ms Alexander is going to take this series because I did not and will not read the synopsis of the next book that was at the end of this one (I love surprises!).
Thank you Ms Alexander for giving me such a fun few hours! This was a riveting, engrossing and enthralling, FUN read.

Edie Spence is just recuperating from her last adventure in paranormalland and is now back at work as a RN at the secret Y4 wing of County Hospital. Now, Y4 is the secret wing of the hospital that takes care of the city's paranormals and their lackeys. It's operated by the mysterious Consortium, of which more will be heard of in this novel, and whose watchdogs are "The Shadows". The Shadows feed on misery, pain, depression, and despair, and they have the ability to effect a person's physiology and tinker with a person's mind and to rewrite person's memories. Fun, eh?

Today Edie is on her way to work with a fellow Y4 employee when she becomes enmeshed in another adventure. As she is coming to work today she sees King Winter, the ruthless Alpha leader of the Deepest Snow werewolf clan flattened by a rogue Mack truck. As it happens, there will be much carrying on, but little genuine sorrow for his fate. It is through the Deepest Snow clan that Edie will meet Lucas, who will be both Edie's intermediary between her and the Deepest Snow clan and Edie, and who will be another possible romantic interest while he is ordered to watch over her.

Edie will also be caught in-between the power play of the werewolf clans of the House Of Gray, who is blamed for the attempted assassination of King Winter, and the Deepest Snow clan. However, as the novel progresses we wonder "Are the House of Gray responsible, or not"? We've all read way too many mysteries to take the obvious at face value.

Meanwhile, Anna is back, and this time not only is she being tested by other vampire clans for a possible chance to start her own house or clan.

This follow up to the first book is excellent. More to feed my imagination with the additional in-depth world building. The picture is getting clearer and I really enjoyed finding out more about the vampires and weres. I easily dropped right into the story and love all the characters. The werewolf lore is very good and interesting - I really liked the different types of werewolves and not just different animals. And the story of Edie's brother - the author kept it real and I greatly appreciated this.

I still am having some trouble connecting or getting a grip on how Edie is managing all this. She just seems to take it all in stride even though this is all new. I think it stood out the most with the cyborg - after the initial couple minutes of shock she just seemed to shrug and move on. But I will give props for how she handled the death of someone who was not exactly her friend but she knew from the beginning - that was a reaction I felt. I admit that writing a main character running with the big boys of vamps, weres and many other creatures who does not have any woo woo herself is really hard to do. The author manages to pull it off very well. The men that Edie has had seem to like her on strength of character alone and 1 even left her so we are not getting "true love forever" carp.

I was kind of disappointed about the change at the end. I really liked Y4 ward and wanted more from there. Then again I am also very curious what will happen next. I read the teaser for the next book and can't wait. I highly recommend this series. This is great story telling, great paranormal creatures with detailed world building and most importantly we get a protagonist that doesn't have a million super powers, is not the special one, is not the one every man wants and is not a weapons expert. She is Edie - a compassionate nurse that found herself in another world that is exciting and terrifying and may give her life a little more meaning.
