Book Description

When fourteen-year-old Riley goes to investigate some strange activity on a remote section of his family's ranch, he meets up with a group of renegades running a moonshine still. Riley knows that this never would have happened while his father was alive, but ever since his daddy died it's been a struggle to keep the ranch safe. Fortunately, Riley's Grampy shows up just in time to help. With Grampy in the lead, the family sets off to find the truth, and gets caught up in a crime ring that extends farther than any of them ever imagined. A compelling mystery, this book combines an intriguing cast of characters with an oft-overlooked period in American history.

From School Library Journal

Gr 5-9-A mystery/adventure novel set in the Texas Panhandle in the mid-1920s. Fourteen-year-old Riley McDaniels's father has just died, and he and his mother struggle to keep their ranch going, a ranch that they rent from his mother's aunt. Riding home from school one afternoon, the teen and his brother discover that moonshiners have built a still in a nearby deserted canyon on their property and are making whiskey. Unfortunately, the family also discovers that local lawmen are either in cahoots with the bandits or are too scared to help. When the McDanielses receive an eviction notice, Riley, his mother, grandpa, and younger brother travel to the wild town of Sparrow to confront their Aunt Mattie. Sparrow is a lawless oil boomtown with corrupt officials who allow outlaws to control it. Riley's family meets Aaron, one of the leaders of a small group of citizens who are trying to rid the town of corruption, and discover that Aunt Mattie is being poisoned by the town doctor and forced to sign documents by one of her dead husband's friends. In a series of surprising twists and turns, Riley helps to save his aunt, Aaron, a Texas Ranger, and the ranch. While the plot is somewhat improbable, the story is well developed and exciting. With its historical basis and accuracy, and its strong, though perhaps somewhat stereotypical characters, the novel rings true in its portrayal of an exciting era in a setting that is usually ignored.

More About the Author

John R. Erickson, a former cowboy and ranch manager, is gifted with a storyteller's knack for spinning a yarn. Through the eyes of Hank the Cowdog, a smelly, smart-aleck Head of Ranch Security, Erickson gives readers a glimpse of daily life on a ranch in the West Texas Panhandle. This series of books and tapes is in school libraries across the country, has sold more than 7.6 million copies, is a Book-of-the-Month Club selection, and is the winner of the 1993 Audie for Outstanding Children's Series from the Audio Publisher's Association. Publishers Weekly calls Hank a "grassroots publishing phenomena," and USA Today says this is "the best family entertainment in years."

The road to stardom for Hank, however, wasn't all dog biscuits and gravy. Erickson graduated from the University of Texas in 1966 and studied for two years at Harvard Divinity School. He began to publish short stories in 1967 while working full-time as a cowboy, farmhand, and ranch manager in Texas and Oklahoma. Hank and his sidekick Drover are dogs Erickson worked with on the range. This mixture of true-life experience, fun, and adventure has gained Hank a loyal following of thousands of children and adults.

In 1982, however, Erickson was at his rope's end. "I was working out in the cold; there was 8 inches of snow on the ground," he says, "I had just gotten a couple of rejection slips from New York publishers, and I had a wife with two kids and another one on the way." So, with $2,000 in borrowed money, Erickson started his own publishing company, appropriately named Maverick Books.

Hank the Cowdog made his debut in the pages of The Cattleman, a magazine for adults. An obvious favorite of readers, Erickson included two of Hank's humorous stories in Maverick Book's first publishing effort, The Devil in Texas (1982). Erickson began selling books from his pickup truck at cattle auctions, rodeos, and just about any place cowboys gathered.

When Erickson started getting "Dear Hank" letters, he knew he was onto something. So in 1983, he self-published 2,000 copies of The Original Adventures of Hank the Cowdog, and they sold out in 6 weeks. Not long after that first printing, the book was recorded word-for-word on audiotape. Since then, every Hank book has been recorded, making Hank the longest-running successful children's series on audio, ever. (Source: Billboard)

When teachers began inviting Erickson to their schools, Hank found his most eager fans. Teachers, librarians, and students alike love Hank. According to some Texas Library Association surveys, the Hank the Cowdog books are the most popular selections in many libraries' children's sections. The lively characters make excellent material for reading and writing lessons, and turn even the most reluctant readers into avid Hank-fans. When used with the books, Hank tapes increase reading skills rapidly. And, in response to popular demand from the growing bilingual market, the first two Hank the Cowdog adventures are available in Spanish.

Although the Hank books began as a regional phenomenon, CBS Television heard about them and brought out a thirty-minute cartoon of the first book. It aired in May 1985 as part of a series called "CBS Storybreak."

Erickson has also written several books for young adults, the "Riley McDaniels Series". The first book of the series, "Moonshiner's Gold", won the 2003-2004 Lamplighter Award. The second book in the series, "Discovery at Flint Springs," was a finalist for the Lamplighter Award the following year. He has also written several books about cowboying based on his own experiences.

Erickson was born in Midland, Texas, but by the age of 3, he had moved with his family to Perryton, Texas, where he and his wife live today on their working cattle ranch. They have 3 grown children and 4 grandchildren. His advice to young writers is, "Write about something you know. Try to leave your readers better off than they were before."

4.0 out of 5 stars Good book for kids, May 28, 2003

This review is from: Moonshiner's Gold (Mass Market Paperback)
Moonshiner's Gold is a good adventure story with an interesting plot, but is most suited for middle school age. It is a very fast read and leaves you feeling good about the outcome of the book and life in general. As a high school senior, I found this book to be a little low level for me. I was often bored with the simple words and grammer used. For a fourteen-year-old, however, it would be a great book.

Although Moonshiner's Gold is build with an old time western-type plot, it has a modern feel to it. The action is well planned out and it is written well. The book flows from one setting to another making it feel like you are riding along with the main character. Overall, Moonshiner's Gold is a fun, simple book meant for a younger audience, yet still enjoyable for adults.

I like to be surprised and I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this little treasure. I suspect that this book with the un-cool title and pulp-western cover will get overlooked by the publisher, press, and the public. It is a gem of a story to share with your kids or to read for your own enjoyment.

Reading it reminded me of the hours I spent with the Hardy Boys as a kid and as a father reading them again to my children. There is only one difference: "Moonshiner's Gold" is really well written. Built on a tried-and-true western plot of "save the family ranch," the author has populated the tale with interesting characters and set it in a time and place balanced on the edge of on the old west and the modern world.

The story unfolds in the Texas Panhandle of 1927. The mixture of horses and cars, traditional ranch life and oil boom town society is fascinating. Mr. Erickson combines a ne'er-do-well Grandpa, a widowed mom, an adventurous teen, skulking moonshiners, hidden gold, the Texas Rangers, and skunk-nabbing to weave this entertaining yarn.

My daughter is a big Hank the Cowdog fan. I started buying the books on cassette because I couldn't read the things to her out loud because I was laughting too hard. However, after 30+ books they get a little tiring.

Now Mr. Erickson has written something with more substance and I must say I'm impressed. I bought this book on audio tape to listen to with my 7 year old daughter in the car. I really enjoyed it and my daughter was instantly hooked by it. Though I would think boys will enjoy it more than girls, my daughter is already requesting that we listen to it again. It is a rousing adventure story with lots of humor. I hope Mr. Erickson is busy writing more books for the older child (and us adults)to enjoy.
