Review

"John Sculley, in his new book 'Moonshot!: Game-Changing Strategies to Build Billion-Dollar Businesses' argues that every entrepreneur now needs to think and act like one of those elite entrepreneurs who could go the extra mile and cause disruptive change… It’s time to adopt the adaptive innovator entrepreneur mindset principles, capitalize on the game-changing new technologies, and go for the gold.” - (Martin Zwilling Forbes Contributor)

"The real question is, how many business-strategy books are published before leaders (and wannabes) say, “Please, sir, no more”? With a name and reputation that will open many doors and sell books, former CEO (PepsiCo and Apple) and now second-time author (Odyssey: Pepsi to Apple) Sculley delivers a clear message to individuals, entrepreneurs, and corporations: change . . . or wither. Although he never quite issues that ultimatum, it’s clear from his 10 principles―such as customers come first, create a noble cause, solve a billion-dollar problem, pursue relentlessly, and practice disruptive pricing―that adaptability is key. The precepts of that vision are simple but still challenging for many. Stories are what make his principles live, though there isn’t as much attention paid to execution. New wisdom for new entrepreneurs; timeless advice for leaders. - (Barbara Jacobs Booklist)

Moonshot is one of those quintessentially practical business books. A must read for anyone interested in being part of the next exponential technological opportunity. Mr. Sculley succinctly captures the four pillars behind breathtaking technologies today. He is one of those rare individuals that truly believes that the future is better than you think. This book should resonate with many on the other side of the Atlantic and provide a dose of optimism as Europe copes with stagnant economic growth. I found the Chapter on failure, Mr. Sculley refers to it as 'pivot', quite compelling. Why have so many Multi-Billion dollar businesses had, and continue to have, their genesis in the United States? in America business people are permitted to fail. Sharing those failures is not only a sign of maturity but benefits others embarking on exponential business ideas. As Eleanor Roosevelt once opined, Learn from the mistakes of others. You can't live long enough to make them all yourself. If there was ever a road map to create a Billion Dollar business, than Moonshot is your vehicle to start your journey.

Mr. Sculley increased sales at Apple from $800 million to $8 billion during his 10-years as CEO. There’s no magic wand here, Mr. Sculley over the years has acquired a number of domain skills that gives him unique insight on how to grow a business. This is particularly important with industry’s constantly transforming with use of new technologies to better serve customers. Just being a large company is no guarantee of future success. Look at Motorola, Blackberry as examples. Netflix was sinking fast, but was able to ask the right questions and is now thriving again. Sculley has been involved in a number of successful start-up companies as well as a mentor to dozens of other successful entrepreneurs. Sculley not only talks about important strategies for growing multi-billion dollar companies but gives specific first hand accounts. This is a rarity for business books, most deal with concepts and not reality.
If you wish to get onboard and see what the future holds and how things are changing from a management, investor or entrepreneur standpoint this break-through book is your ticket to success.

One of the best business books of the year. Sculley has deep credibility and his intuition of business is similar to that of visionaries. The book is highly accessible and even small business owners can pick up important lessons. The best part is Sculley's focus on billion dollar ideas.

This book is pretty insightful about a world which values adaptive innovators and customers-in-control, more and more. While marketing is still important, the abilities to combine new technologies, using Big Data, Mobile Technologies, and sensing customers' wants and needs, while giving them ultra-customer experience are the "Musts". But one thing interesting about the ex-CEO of Apple, John Sculley is that, he was so quiet and relatively more low profile while Steve Jobs was still alive. He did not make a lot of comments about Apple than he does these days. But certainly Jon Sculley is a smart man, who was not only great in selling sugar water (Pepsi), but is an insightful, perceptive marketing man who can see through different business and technology new trends and help us make sense out of them. This book is an interesting read, helping us to look at new trends that we sometimes have taken things for granted. His comment about Amazon's Founder, Jeff Bezos is interesting and right on: "Customers are loyal to Amazon, until customers find offers or new services that are one day outperforming Amazon, and offer us other forms of new, innovative offers" (what he said in general terms, not a direct quote from the book). Personally I enjoy John Sculley's books since he was also the one who inspired Steve Jobs a lot about brand marketing in Apple's old days, until Steve Jobs turned into a even greater marketing man on his own.

I just completed this wonderful book and have to comment. As a surgeon for 33 years and a serial entrepreneur for almost as long, John Sculley's roles as CEO, entrepreneur and mentor must also include the quality of visionary. He beautifully illustrates where we have been, where we currently are, and how to be successful in the future. I used his lessons today when speaking to a referring doctor and asked if I had done something wrong as I had not seen as many patients referred by him. He commended me on asking him, assured me it was nothing I had done. I told him I needed to ask to be sure he was satisfied with my performance. Customer satisfaction, as repeatedly driven home in the book, is the key to success of any undertaking. I strongly recommend this book to all young people looking for the key to success in their future and to everyone else looking for an insightful and enjoyable read. Thank you Michael Patipa M.D.

John Sculley does a great job describing the "Adaptive Innovator" and convergence of the new cloud technologies which are now revolutionizing startups. The most exciting part for me was the fact that the strongest growth of startups are with folks that are over 50 years old. it's never too late to start your own gig and build a great team. And John reminds us you're never too important to take our the garbage -- usually verified by Mom. Thank you John!
