Book Description

February 21, 2011
In this intriguing and frankly erotic tale set in an intricately developed alternate world, the moon has rings, mammoths survive in the far north, and a patriarchal empire rules over provincial kingdoms where the Goddess is still revered. Legend tells that long ago the Gods sailed here from the East, but now this is a world of humans. Or is it?

At the heart of the Kemnoan Empire, in the imperial capital Ulan, handsome Prince Dare is the heir to the throne. But this restless young man flees from his duty on a journey of self-discovery with his chameleon cat, Maumet, as his only companion. Telling himself that he's seeking enlightenment, Dare sets off on foot for the mountainous kingdom of Loonapoore, where sacred mammoths are revered. The Loonapoori term for enlightenment means ''tusk of the moon.'' As much as spiritual enlightenment, the young man really seeks the truth of the feelings and passions in his maturing body.

Meanwhile, a young Loonapoori noble named Hosis flees from his own family destiny riding on the back of a stolen mammoth cow. From separate directions, the two young men are pulled inexorably toward what will be to both a startling rendezvous and the beginning of an epic adventure together. Accompanied by the mysterious Lady Dee, they will journey to the South Seas to seek the fabled Dream Orchid, said to bestow either enlightenment or death.

Along the way Dare encounters both the threat-and the promise-of alluring erotic fulfillment.

More About the Author

BRUCE P. GRETHER lives in the Hill Country of Texas with his beloved partner Tom. Bruce grew up in Southeast Asia as the son of Protestant missionaries. He lived in Berkeley, California off and on during the 1960s, and later in various other places. His diverse experience contributed to the richness of his imaginative stories. After completing his university studies at CSU in Colorado, his personal breakthrough in learning to cultivate male erotic energy transformed him. He began to develop the practice he calls Mindful Masturbation that inspired the "droojikah" of the Moontusk novels.

The Moontusk Chronicles Book Two: Orchid of Awakening is COMING IN FALL 2011! (Click reduced image below to see the beautiful new cover art) With this second novel of The Moontusk Chronicles, the epic journey of the two young men, Dare and Hosis continues. The mysterious Lady Dee acts as their sponsor as they travel south along the mighty Nasapan River. Various misadventures along the way complicate the three-way relationship. One startling development is the return of Dare's companion, the chameleon cat Maumet, who vanished in Book One. As the passion between the young men heats up, the three reach the southern delta and sail to Dreamwake Island in the South Seas. The lady soon gives them shocking news that will change their relationship and the world they live in forever. She leaves them on the island together and departs for the mainland. Hosis cannot prevent Dare from seeking out the fabled Dream Orchid. The flower is said to either enlighten or kill with its potent fragrance...

5.0 out of 5 stars Moontusk, A tale of Sexual & Spiritual discovery 1: Rendezvous in a Ruined City by Bruce P. Grether, May 27, 2011
This review is from: Moontusk: Rendezvous in a Ruined City (Paperback)
Already from the title you can understand that is an ambitious project and this is barely book 1 out of 5 (following there will be Book Two: Orchid of Awakening, Book Three: The Return of Othis, Book Four: Ivory and Gold and Book Five: The White Mammoth). So probably some of the open points we have here are due to the fact that this is only the "meeting", a rendezvous, of two young men, and when they met, more or less at the end of the book, their travel has not reach an end, but it's only at the beginning. Both Dare than Othis are still men-to-be, and in a way, this is almost a coming of age novel, with Dare and Othis at the brink of their adulthood.

This implies a second details that I think it's worth to highlight, both in the subtitle, A tale of Sexual and Spiritual discovery, than in the blurb, a frankly erotic tale, there is an accentuation on the sex and eroticism, but sincerely, even if we have some sexual intercourses, and even a ménages a trois, this is not at all an erotic romance, or at least not the erotica I'm used to. There is no putting the sex, and the sex scene, on the center stage, but they are more or less part of the growing process of Dare and Othis. They are almost an experiment for these young men to decide if they really like men more than women, if they are homosexual or not, if they want to share their life with another man. Again another reason why I had the feeling this was a coming of age story.

The universe Bruce P. Grether created is unique and fascinating, a truly fantasy world of the best tradition; like in those novels of the '70 and '80, there is a "map" of this universe to introduce the reader and help visualize the path the heroes will follow, and scattered here and there, some illustrations, that, as the cover and the map, are by the same author. I think this novel will appeal a lot the fantasy lovers, even the old fashioned details of having a pet as travel companion, a pet that is sometime wiser and more faithful than any other human being, is respected: a chameleon cat for Dare, a mammoth for Othis. On this regard, I have to rise my only complaint to the author: it's not good manners to be evil towards these pets, and while good friends or lovers can be sacrificed for the sake of the story (best friends more than lovers), a pet should always arrive to the end of the story and walk towards the horizon with his owner... at least in one case, I'm not still sure the author didn't give a second chance to the cherished pet, and for the other one, well, we can say that the pet accomplished the mission to be protector and support to the owner.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really good read - can't wait for Book Two, May 2, 2011

This review is from: Moontusk: Rendezvous in a Ruined City (Paperback)
It's everything you could want in a novel - absorbing and hard to put down - leaving you hoping the author will hurry up with the sequel. There's a lot of imagination at work here in creating another world, but that doesn't get in the way of getting to know the principal characters and coming to care about them, knowing and hoping that they will get to their rendezvous in good shape. The plot moves right along with plenty of adventure and some erotic happenings that make the characters vibrant and sexy. And how many books have a mammoth with a heart of gold?

A wonderful escape from modern life and culture to another world, a world where we witness gender roles clearly, imagine the divine Goddess, and gaia's unbridled nature. All based on our own long ago egalitarian history but played out in another world and time. The characters pull you into their minds and keep you there as they explore their new mature identities. A true delight for both male and female readers.
