Based upon years of study, the detailed tactical maps in Moore's Bentonville book provide step-by-step orientation for all three days of this fascinating Civil War engagement. Detailed battle descriptions enhance the maps, and many of the battle's participants tell their own stories, with easy reference to unit locations on the battlefield. For tourists and scholars alike, this user-friendly study offers more than your average battlefield guidebook.

"Skillfully and effectively employing both tactical and modern highway maps, along with a clear explanatory narrative keyed to both, Mark Moore's book on the Battle of Bentonville is simply the best Civil War battlefield guide ever compiled. It will serve as a model for all similar efforts."--CRAIG L. SYMONDS, United States Naval Academy; acclaimed author of "Joseph E. Johnston: A Civil War Biography" and "Stonewall of the West: Patrick Cleburne and the Civil War." "Moore's Historical Guide to the Battle of Bentonville is a masterful piece of work. Mark A. Moore is to be congratulated."

The Battle of Bentonville by Mark A. Moore proves to be an excellent battlefield guide book to this historical battle that was the last major battle fought in the American Civil War. The book gives step by step look this last campaign, starting off from Battle of Monroe's Crossroad on 10 March 1865 until the Battle of Bentonville ended on 21 March 1865. The reader will be able to followed the battles and the campaign thanks to the many maps provided in this book that gives a very clear and detail look at the battles and campaign, using a simplified modern map with modern roads so it possible for the reader to trace and follow the events of the book.
The book is well written enough that is provides an excellent introduction to these battles and campaign, allowing the reader to get the full understanding without cluttering of information overload. There is a good balance here between information given, maps provided and giving the reader a clear understanding of the battles and campaign overall. Although the book was written for travalers and visitors to the historical locations, the book remains interesting for readers like myself who lives on the other side of the continent. While I did visit North Carolina once, it was before this book was published. I wish I had it then. It would have encourage me to explore Bentonville campaign closely instead of drive by. The book come well recommended for anyone who wish to know more about Battle of Bentonville without being weight down by a heavy book. Its also an excellent introduction to the battle in preparation of studying it further. Both ways, the book is well worth the time and effort to read it.

Excellent Historical Guide to Bentonville,

This review is from: Moore's Historical Guide To The Battle Of Bentonville (Paperback)
"Moore's Historical Guide to the Battle of Bentonville" is undoubtedly the finest battlefield resource ever seen by this reviewer. The maps are models of clarity and comprehensiveness. Significant facts and analyses are presented in a very readable "bullet" format, enlivened by vivid quotations by participants. Sketches and photos, both from the Civil War era as well as modern times, further assist the reader in gaining orientation to the battlefield. Perhaps most importantly, Moore's masterful work places Bentonville in the complete context of Sherman's Carolinas Campaign and the entire Carolina-Virginia Theater. This work in unquestionably indispensable to both the serious Civil War scholar and the tourist.--KEMP BURPEAU, "Civil War News"

FANTASTIC MAPS!,

Short, concise history, so if you want a lot of detail, you'll probably want another book to compliment this one. However, it's real value lays in a lengthy series of fantastic maps that are extremely useful and worth the price of the book alone. You won't find anything like them elsewhere, and I found them indispensable. The Order of Battle for the troops involved is a nice touch too. If you're interested in the Battle of Bentonville, then this is a must have.

Moore's Historical Guide To The Battle Of Bentonville by Mark A. Moore is 100 pages and was released on October 21, 1997. Page 92 is the bibliography section and pages 93 to 100 are the index section. The book reads more like a tour guide book like you actually on the battlefield then a history. On the even page is the map and on the opposite page is the information for the map, so you are constantly reading a little and then looking at the map and that gets kind of tiring after a chapter or two. Towards the end of the book you get a breakdown of both armies. I would have much preferred if this read like your average history book. Moore's Historical Guide To The Battle Of Bentonville gets a C.
