Amazon.com Review
Seemingly awkward and slow-footed, the moose has long been the subject of parody. However, as Moose, an interesting and informative title in the Creatures of the Wild series, reveals, nothing could be further from the truth. In fact, the moose is an excellent example of form following function. With the longest legs of any animal in North America it is surprisingly swift, even capable of outrunning wolves. Moose are also strong and tireless swimmers. Weighing in at nearly a ton and wielding antlers up to six feet across, a real-life Bullwinkle is no laughing matter.
Hardbound and printed in full color, Moose offers detailed explanations of the social system, mating rituals, habitat, and predators of these majestic creatures. At 80 pages, the book offers a good selection of handsome photographs. However, it would have been of benefit to include more examples of bulls engaged in vigorous displays during rutting. Still, there is a fine assortment of generally excellent photographs capturing these shy animals in various seasons. --George Laney
