Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—This rhyming text begins by asking: "What/would you do/with a moose/on the loose?/Would you chase him,/or race him,/or stand up to face him?" As the book continues, the creature becomes more daring, and children will delight in the antics of both the moose and its young human companion. Bold, bright, cartoonlike illustrations capture the action in a humorous style, inviting readers to look closely at all the details. The large boldfaced type complements the illustrations and action. Colorful spreads and simple rhymes will make this whimsical story a hit.—Margaret R. Tassia, Millersville University, PA END

This is a really fun read aloud for the preschool set. It reads really smoothly and gives lots of opportunity for audience interaction. The illustrations are hilarious - I mean a moose wearing socks? The book ends on a gentle cautionary note reminding readers that no matter what you want to do with a moose, mom has the final say. This reminded me a bit of Numeroff's Mouse series, since it seems to have the same rythm. A solid addition to any storytime collection.

I saw this book on the shelf at a book store and being from Alaska, I bought it from here. It is such a cute and fun book to read. My daughter is only 5 months old and smiles every time I read it to her. I'm so glad I bought this book! We will enjoy it for years.

This book looked cute, but I shouldn't have judged it by the cover. I wanted to really like it, but it has many things working against it. Many of the rhymes feel forced, repetition is expected in a children's book but "would you" is asked entirely too many times, and the flow is off. The ending is awful. My child likes the fact that there is a moose, but beyond that doesn't show any extra interest in this book vs. the dozens of others we have.

This is an excellent book for children ages 3+, with clever and funny illustrations, and words that rhyme. I highly recommend it.
