Helpful Book,
This review is from: The Moose with Loose Poops (Dr. Hippo) (Hardcover)
I accidentally bought this book (I was thinking of If You Give a Moose a Muffin) but I was entertained just the same. In fact, their plots are kind of similar what with the chain reactions and all.

A family guide with advice on Getting Through Gastroenteritis,
By Midwest Book Review (Oregon, WI USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Moose with Loose Poops (Dr. Hippo) (Hardcover)
Dr. Charlotte Cowan sometimes with tongue in cheek presents a family guide with advice on Getting Through Gastroenteritis for children 2 to 7. Using a family of moose, she presents an easy to follow camping trip as the scenario for approaching a difficult topic to be explained to youngsters. Children can heal quickly, but when they do not comprehend their illness, they are frightened. Beautifully illustrated and in language which can easily be understood by the audience of youngsters, including moose. Dr. Cowan has achieved her goal of helping get through another difficult time in the rearing process.
Included is a handy guide with some very practical advice for parents on the subject of recognizing gastroenteritis. Another section gets into problems when a doctor is needed for treatment. When to return children to daycare or school is covered along with suggestions on keeping the rest of the family from getting sick. Most causes of gastroenteritis are very contagious. In case you have not gotten the message yet, gastroenteritis is often called a stomach bug or the stomach flu. The laminated pocket guide should be kept in the medicine cabinet or where you keep home doctoring guides. Clark Isaacs Reviewer

Got Poops?,
By
This review is from: The Moose with Loose Poops (Dr. Hippo) (Hardcover)
Explaining to your child why he is leaking poop is pretty hard without the aid of a compelling book like this one. THE MOOSE WITH LOOSE POOPS really helped me in explaining the concept of diarrhea to my children. Almost as useful as the little ditty "When you're sitting in the dirt and you feel a little squirt," the book is just one more reference for the loving parent who wants their child to understand that dropping the kids off at the pool is natural; even when the kids seem to have liquidized into something resembling extra smooth peanut butter. Even if your children have experienced loose stool before, this book will give them exactly the information they need to feel ok about it.

Diarrhea Galore!,
By Katydid79 (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
This review is from: The Moose with Loose Poops (Dr. Hippo) (Hardcover)
Thank goodness for this book. I always wanted an illustrated guide to my diarrhea. I think that the author should take this book to the next level and create pop up and scratch n sniff versions to further explore the complexities of mud butt. Maybe include a chocolate pudding sample as a promotion? Worms?
However, I do think it should be noted that you cannot expect a moose to live a human lifestyle and not get sick in some fashion. Forcing a moose to use indoor plumbing for these pictures must have been quite a challenge - I can only imagine the stress! No wonder the poor thing had hershey squirts.

Fun and informative,

Miles Moose is excited about his upcoming camping trip with his dad. But then his tummy starts to act funny, with some very unpleasant results. Looks like he'll be waiting a few days to take his trip so his tummy can get better.
Although the title of this book may cause a few heads to turn, The Moose With Loose Poops was written to help explain gastroenteritis to kids. The first time they experience vomiting or diarrhea, they may become worried. Dr. Cowan wanted to reassure them that this is perfectly normal but uncomfortable tummy behavior when they're sick. Penelope Neal has created cute illustrations showing us how Miles handles his illness. The author also includes a guide to gastroenteritis for parents, who may be even more concerned than their kids. It explains home treatment and when to call a doctor if symptoms seem to be getting worse. I highly recommend this cute and informative story for all families with young children. The Moose with Loose Poops (Dr. Hippo)
Miles the moose is very excited about his upcoming camping trip with his Papa, when they will ride in a canoe to a nearby island to go fishing. But Miles' tummy doesn't feel well - like there are waves inside of him - and soon a big wave comes up from inside him and he throws up. After a night of rest and fluids, Miles feels much better and ready for his camping trip with Papa. But soon he begins to feel an ache much lower in his tummy and, after Papa gets him to the bathroom, Miles is surprised and dismayed to find that he has pooped out a waterfall. What's wrong with him? Has this ever happened to anyone else? How will he get better? The Moose with Loose Poops weaves a child-friendly story around an explanation of the facts of gastroenteritis, commonly called the stomach bug or stomach flu. Although Miles is unsettled by what is happening to his body, he is comforted by the matter-of-fact reactions of his parents and sister and their reassurance that each of them has also been sick this way. The medical advice in the story is given by kindly Dr. Hippo, who helps Miles' parents decide what to do for him, and when Miles finally gets better a few days later he is able to go on his camping trip with Papa after all. This is an excellent book for explaining gastroenteritis to a sick child, as well as lightening their mood and encouraging them that they will get better soon. A Parents Guide is also included as a separate booklet in the back of the book with helpful guidelines for taking care of children with gastroenteritis.

Recommend for every child,
This review is from: The Moose with Loose Poops (Dr. Hippo) (Hardcover)
You may laugh at the title and the subject matter, but this is a very smart book. The story teaches kids what happens to your body when you have diarrhea. Speaking as a child who used to get tummy aches when she was sick, like the little moose, and did not know what was wrong either, I think that's a great thing to explain in a friendly little book. We have all had it and dealt with it at one point in our lives, so I think this is a story kids absolutely need to have at home. This book also comes with a little handbook for parents on how to take care of a child with gastroenteritis.

Every parent goes through it, little ones sometimes find it a bit scary. But for five year old Miles it happens right before a planned camping trip with Papa and during a family picnic Miles throws up. Oh no, now what? The next morning Miles is feeling fine but Mama Moose warns him to eat just a little breakfast, not too much. After breakfast Miles has a different kind of a tummy ache. The loose poops. What's that?
This book is part of the Dr. Hippo series written by Dr. Charlotte Cowan, a board certified pediatrician and author of 5 medical children's stories that entertain and educates, reassuring both child and parent about common childhood illnesses. Included is a laminated parents guide at the back of the book, with medical advice for what to do for newborns through toddlers for a case of gastroenteritis (throwing up and diarrhea). This book has bright colorful illustrations to hold your child's attention. The illustrator is Penelope Neal. This is her first children's book. |
