Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1—This slight story about Moose and his joke-telling pal, Magpie, doesn't have enough substance to sustain a child's interest. The simple story line, using a bizarre combination of fact and fantasy, follows the young creature from early summer through fall and into winter. During those months, the moose grows, sheds antlers, and learns to understand and tell jokes. Magpie, a raccoon, a skunk, and a beaver accompany him as he aimlessly wanders the countryside and swims the river. The lame jokes are superfluous and nonsensical. Only Moose and Magpie speak, but the beaver wears glasses and reads books, the raccoon eats chocolate mousse, the skunk uses hair mousse, and all the animals except Moose walk upright. Each page has a small fact box, and the book concludes with four pages of information on birds and moose. The text is illustrated by brightly colored pictures, with everything outlined in black. While the illustrations may appeal to children, they are not enough to save this book.—Maryann H. Owen, Racine Public Library, WI END

More About the Author

Bettina Restrepo pushed her way out in Ft Sill, Lawton, Oklahoma. Two weeks later, she received a passport and began traveling the world.

Her German mother, her Colombian father, and big brother migrated from place to place with the US Army. She received her BS in Communications from the University of Texas at Austin - where she marched in the band, made a "D" in math, and slept through economics. But, she still graduated in three years with an unquenchable lust for learning and reading.

Bettina spent many years being a frustrated Internal Auditor, while writing at night, far away from the eyes of the corporate world.

She loves young adult literature as she never quite grew up from her sixteen-year old self. Bettina has a wicked sense of humor and is a member of the The Class of 2k11 www.classof2k11.com - a prestigious group of debut young adult authors. She is also the award winning picture book author of MOOSE AND MAGPIE (Sylvan-Dell Publishing 2009)

5.0 out of 5 stars Stories for Children Magazine 5 Star Review, September 30, 2009
This review is from: Moose and Magpie (Hardcover)
If you were a full-grown moose at the age of one, what would you do when your antlers started coming in and began to itch like crazy? Moose, who lives where the willow trees touch the ground and the lily pads float on the water, has just become an adult, and his head prickles so much that he has to find a tree and rub his head against it with all his might. In so doing, he disturbs his friend Magpie, who starts to tell him jokes to ease his mind. Follow Moose and his friends as spring becomes summer, which turns into fall, which finally ushers in winter. What will happen to Moose's antlers?

Kids will love the jokes that Magpie tells Moose, and they will learn about an amazing and majestic animal of our natural world at the same time. There are sidebar tidbits of interesting information sprinkled throughout Bettina Restrepo's text, and at the end is Sylvan Dell's usual "For Creative Minds" section, which contains more information about the moose's eating habits, antlers, and life cycle, as well as a "Match the Moose Body Part to its Adaptation" activity. There are also other "Teaching Activities" and "Related Websites" at Sylvan Dell's website. And Sherry Rogers's colorful illustrations are very attractive.
