From School Library Journal
PreSchool-Grade 1In this successful concept book, children start with 1 grinning moose and work their way up to 20 scampering white mice, recognizing and counting some of their favorite animals in between. The creatures appear on single- and double-page spreads along with the numerals they represent. A repetitive refrain encourages readers to look for the orange cat that is hiding in each illustration. Never difficult to discover, the feline is often peeking out from behind the large number, or entirely obvious as it runs off the page. Children will feel triumphant when they do find it, as well as ready for the challenge of counting the named objects. Decorated with beads, rickrack, and buttons, Beatons felt-art pictures are brightly colored and feature cheery animals. Sometimes, however, the scenes can become a bit cluttered with designs and borders. Overall, a nice addition to counting-book collections, with lots of appeal for beginning counters and readers.Susan Marie Pitard, Weezie Library for Children, Nantucket Atheneum, MA

It begins with a moose and ends with 20 mice, but children will be most interested in hunting for the partially (or mostly) hidden orange cat in each of the 20 illustrations. With some pictures on single pages and others on double-page spreads, the artwork consists of brightly colored felt appliques textured with stitching, buttons, rickrack, and the occasional piece of patterned cloth. Clear and direct, the text asks, "one moose, / but where's the cat? / two crabs, / but where's the cat?" Not every young child can count 20 objects, but anyone can look for the cat. The simple satisfaction of playing the game and the pleasure of searching the illustrations guarantee that this counting book will hold children's interest longer than most. A good participation book for preschool story hour.
