Book Description

3 and upBarefoot Beginner
Many first number books teach pre-school children how to count to ten. This energetic hide-and-seek book goes one step further, helping young readers to count a menagerie of brightly colored felt animals, from one moose to twenty mice. Children will love meeting ladybugs, monkeys, dolphins, and tigers, and there is the added challenge of finding the mischievous ginger cat hiding on every page.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 1In this successful concept book, children start with 1 grinning moose and work their way up to 20 scampering white mice, recognizing and counting some of their favorite animals in between. The creatures appear on single- and double-page spreads along with the numerals they represent. A repetitive refrain encourages readers to look for the orange cat that is hiding in each illustration. Never difficult to discover, the feline is often peeking out from behind the large number, or entirely obvious as it runs off the page. Children will feel triumphant when they do find it, as well as ready for the challenge of counting the named objects. Decorated with beads, rickrack, and buttons, Beatons felt-art pictures are brightly colored and feature cheery animals. Sometimes, however, the scenes can become a bit cluttered with designs and borders. Overall, a nice addition to counting-book collections, with lots of appeal for beginning counters and readers.Susan Marie Pitard, Weezie Library for Children, Nantucket Atheneum, MA

From Booklist

It begins with a moose and ends with 20 mice, but children will be most interested in hunting for the partially (or mostly) hidden orange cat in each of the 20 illustrations. With some pictures on single pages and others on double-page spreads, the artwork consists of brightly colored felt appliques textured with stitching, buttons, rickrack, and the occasional piece of patterned cloth. Clear and direct, the text asks, "one moose, / but where's the cat? / two crabs, / but where's the cat?" Not every young child can count 20 objects, but anyone can look for the cat. The simple satisfaction of playing the game and the pleasure of searching the illustrations guarantee that this counting book will hold children's interest longer than most. A good participation book for preschool story hour. Carolyn Phelan --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding picture book, February 20, 2002
By A Customer
My 2-year-old son has loved this book since he got it more than a year ago, and I love it too. The pictures are beautiful and fun to look at on their own, but now we like to count the animals on each page. Looking for the cat hiding on each page is the best part of all.

5.0 out of 5 stars My favorite gift for toddlers, April 17, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: One Moose, Twenty Mice (Barefoot Beginner) (Paperback)
My own daughter (20 months) adores this book, and while I love most of the books in her collection, I have to say it's one of my favorites as well. I've given it to nearly all of our toddler friends as birthday gifts in the past year. This book has a number of levels, from finding the cat -- easy for the very young -- to recognizing animals, facilitating "animal sounds" discussions, counting, etc. And best of all, the art work is stunning. I have a feeling this book will become one of our enduring favorites.

The artwork in this book is amazing. I checked it out at the library for my 2.5 year old and now am buying it for our collection. The illustrations (appliques) are so colorful and creative. My boy enjoys looking for the cat and when he gets older, he can count the objects on each page. The author/illustrator is very creative. A wonderful addition to your library!
