Editorial Reviews

Review

Moral Matters puts a marvelous breadth of concrete issues on the table, and the author expresses himself in a clear, thoughtful and engaging way... Many of the arguments are as well put as I've seen anywhere. Many are original. Many made me stop and think. Throughout the book has the great and rare virtue of being simple without being oversimplified. (David Schmidtz )

a refreshingly direct style; this book is easy to read, and Narveson pulls no punches. (Jocelyn Glidden )

Moral Matters is a first-rate exploration of many of the important issues in applied or normative ethics. (Susan Dimock ) --Susan Dimock

3.0 out of 5 stars A student opinion, December 12, 2000
This review is from: Moral Matters, second edition (Paperback)
The value of Narveson's text is held primarily in his ability to raise relevant, precise questions regarding moral matters. This is a reader friendly account of the libertarian perspective of ethics which allows for easy transitions from premise to conclusion. Chapter one is especially conducive to the understanding of the nature of ethics by readers new to the field. However, at times his arguments lack the force of persuation and leave the reader left with only a vague idea of his libertarian point of view. It seems this book could be strengthened if, having once been a utilitarian himself, Narveson would offer more consideration of the consequentialist perspective while defending his contractualist claims. Despite these problems, this is a book worth reading. At worst, it forces opponents to libertarian thought to rethink their own philosophical grounding. That sort of thought is exactly what philosophy is all about!

5.0 out of 5 stars The Book on Contemporary Issues, March 23, 2000

This review is from: Moral Matters, second edition (Paperback)
The only plausable philosophy for the 21st century is found in Jan Narveson's "Moral Matters." Its excellent use of realistic examples and simple language can be appreciated by both philosophers and non-philosophers. Narveson cuts straight to the Libertarian arguments, and in a "no-holds-barred" style persuedes even the greatest skeptic. Narveson gives the reader the facts on real life issues such as suicide, abortion, war, and sexual harassment. Narveson is the foremost authority on the libertarian idea. From Kant to Nozick, all predisesors will now take a back seat to this contemporary genius. "Moral Matters" will turn every reader into a libertarian. No library, be it public or personal, is complete without a copy of Jan Narveson's "Moral Matters."
