Format: Hardcover
Today Dr David Fisher teaches ethics at Kings College London, UK. A decade ago he was advising Tony Blair on defence and foreign policy. This book, written with great eloquence, passion, and it has to be said, objectivity, reflects all of these experiences. The book does precisely what its title implies. It sets forth an original and persuasive moral perspective and then forcefully applies it to the issues arising in modern warfare.

In his early chapters Fisher sets out to expound and defend the ethical position which he calls virtuous consequentialism, seeking to ally the high seriousness and concern for the individual and the community of virtue theory with the detailed analysis and weighing of the results of action to be found in consequentialism. His prime target is the currently pervasive postmodern view that nothing of any significance can be said of human action because all ethics are relative. On the contrary Fisher argues, they are not, and they are not relative most particularly in the area of war, where the consequences of immoral and ill-judged actions can be disastrous. The book is a forceful intervention seeking to establish firmly that political action - like all other action - must be founded on carefully considered moral principles and their application.

Having established his ethical position Fisher goes on to examine and apply the Just War Theory, going back to its Greek (specifically Aristotelian) and Christian origins, tracing its historical development and bringing it up to date into the age of terror and WMDs.
