Lyrical modern music, May 8, 2002
This review is from: Morango... Almost a Tango (Audio CD)
Lee's 4 pieces are miracles of lyricism despite scant reliance on melody. He achieves the startling outcome of lyricism in these pieces through wonderful rhythm and harmony, and so what sounds melodic is really a trick of the ear. Morango is a delight that will stick with you and having you humming for hours. The third movement of the String Quartet had me on the verge of tears thinking of the World Trade Towers but the piece was written in 1991. Punk Funk in Seven Jazz Pieces will get you up and dancing, while Pierrot's Dreams will haunt you at bedtime. If you love the classic quartet idiom but crave something new to go along with your Beethoven, this may be your answer.
