Review

More Art Puzzles by Numbers is the sequel to Art Puzzles By Number and is the most electrifying new kind of puzzle to come along in many years. Not only are the puzzles fun and beguiling, with tons of fans in the U.S., they are also serving as a valuable resource to teens. The Utah State Textbook Commission designated this book as “Recommended Student Resource” for Mathematics/Pre-Algebra grade levels 7-12 for its emphasis on indirect reasoning skills.

These beguiling puzzles already have millions of devoted fans in Japan, where they were invented years ago. And now Art Puzzles by Numbers has been introduced to the United States where its popularity is growing enormously. The concept is cleverly simple. You start with an empty grid. The numbers to the side and above tell you “how many” squares to fill in the columns and rows. The trick is that the numbers don’t tell you “which” squares to fill in—that’s for you to decide through logical reasoning and by operating back and forth between the columns and the rows. Unlike the crossword puzzle, when you have finished one of these “picture logic” puzzles correctly, you’ve made a picture!

5.0 out of 5 stars THE Best of This Type of Puzzle, January 15, 2007
By
Anna McGraw (Pat) (Canberra, Australia) - See all my reviews
This review is from: More Art Puzzles By Number: From Easy to Mind Bending (Paperback)
I love art puzzles--perhaps even addicted to them--and have bought almost every book I could get a hold of here in Australia over the past two years. Of them all, I have found that Kathy Weaver's are the best. She has a knack for making them just hard enough to be fun and challenging, but also has figures that give enough information to make the puzzle solvable just from the clues given (not the case for many "line drawing" figures of other authors!) Weaver's first book of art puzzles was so good that I bought the book again and redid them all. This new book, so far, seems to be the same top quality.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not Mindbending, March 8, 2007
This review is from: More Art Puzzles By Number: From Easy to Mind Bending (Paperback)
This was an okay book, but more aimed toward the beginner or kids. I started doing the puzzles about half way through the book hoping to get into some harder ones. That never happened. Even the ones at the very end of the book were pretty easy. Nothing remotely close to mindbending.

Weaver is my fav art puzzle maker because I love the logic challenges, but I do NOT like counting 50 squares or more. Some folks love it, but it's just a chore for me. I like Weaver's pics because they are cute and imaginative and they don't go over 30 squares. I hope she comes up with another book soon, I'll buy it!
