Best Yet for Infants,
By A Customer
This review is from: Babysongs - More Baby Songs [VHS] (VHS Tape)
Our son, who is now 15 months old, first saw this video when he was about 8 months old. From that time until this day, when he hears the opening theme music he stops what he's doing and gives his undivided attention to the video for the full 30 minutes. It has worked wonders when he was fussy and needed soothing, when he was sleepy and needed calming, and when my husband or I were tired/busy and needed a break. Even away from the video, just singing one of the songs will bring a smile to his face. This video and others in this series with similar music styles and live action segments (e.g.,"ABC, 123, Colors, and Shapes")have worked better with our infant than those in the series that have some puppetry and more animation (e.g. "Baby Songs"). The animation and puppetry would probably be better for children a little older who have better represenational thought and play skills.

This video is a "must have" in your baby's collection!,

I bought this video back in 1989 for a niece, who loved it and watched it repeatedly. It has since been passed around to each new baby in the family. In ten years, not one baby, boy or girl, hasn't been captavated and entertained by this wonderful tape. It is now back at our house and my 15 month old son loves it. Nothing else has held his attention like this. It's really a must have!

More Baby Songs,

This is an excellent video for children. While not traditional songs, it introduces children to different words and rhythms. The child, though "Family Harmony" learns the names of all the instruments. I was a little concerned about the witch and monster songs, but I preview all videos and then watch them with the children. Those songs didn't turn out to be a problem. We talk about the songs and the characters, which is what we did with "Sitting In A High Chair". We talk about the naughty monkey and how we don't throw food. Even an 18 mo old can understand that. Our almost 2 yr old granddaughter asks for these songs by name and loves watching them. I find myself singing the songs too. Highly recommend!

Not Nearly As Good As Baby Songs,
By A Customer
This review is from: More Baby Songs [VHS] (VHS Tape)
My now 2 1/2 year old son has loved his Baby Songs video since his first birthday. I recently bought More Baby Songs and was very disappointed. The first two songs are cute "Walking" and "The Hammer Song". Next came the high chair song which shows a chimp in a high chair flinging food all over the kitchen. Not exactly something I want to encourage in a young child with little impulse control and an ornery streak a mile long. The "Crazy Monster" song and "Watch a Wicthie Whiz" were actually a little frightening to my son. The last two songs "Wild and Wooly" and "Family Harmony" were too backwoods, hick for me. They were intended to be, but it's a little much. Stick with the original for fun songs with cute themes.

Scary songs...,

I love baby song original, and 'more baby songs' is still more of the good stuff. What let's it down for me is the 'monster' and 'Witch' songs. I don't like the scary songs for little children. Keep the good, bin the bad.

Bought my first "More Baby Songs" when my now 25 yo son was a toddler. Both my kids loved it. When my granddaughter came along, I played it for her ... and it is once again a hit! Wish I could find the original More Baby Songs on DVD. There is a DVD version, but it is not the same as the original. The original version includes "Crazy Monster" and "Watch a Witchy Whiz" -- both favorites and would not want to replace them. So we bought a 2nd original VHS copy (ours was looking pretty tattered) as a backup and will keep at least one VHS player available just for this. It's worth it!

Years ago, I purchased 5 Baby Songs videos for granddaughter #1. She loved them all. When granddaughter #2 began watching them, she immediately loved them. Recently I checked to see if we owned all that were available and I found More Baby Songs. I bought it for her but it was quite disappointing considering what we had come to expect from Baby Songs. Primarily, the monsters bother her. I wonder why monsters were ever included in a video for young toddlers?

I like the songs and sometimes find myself humming one after the tape is finished, but of course the real test is whether my one-year-old will do so when he gets old enough. The video treatments are generally imaginative and stimulating on an appropriate level for infants and toddlers. When I play this for our one-year-old it seems to grab him immediately, but only holds his attention for about half the tape. Some other "baby videos" hold his interest consistently start-to-finish. I don't know if it's a particular song or video that bores him in the middle, or if the cumulative effect just doesn't grab him strongly enough, or if it's age-related. I have a theory that it's because the singing is not done onscreen, as it is in the Barney videos or Sesame Street, but that's just a guess. The target audience is probably kids a little further into the verbal stage, although the song topics cover a pretty wide age range. The bottom line is that these original songs are far more appealing (to my ears) than the typical Barney tune, for instance. And the on-location, real-people video settings are a great change of pace from the highly-controlled studio production typical of many other baby videos. I plan to get at least one other of the tapes in this series, as this one is pretty effective already, and will probably stand up to repeat use for a while.
